Am I being treated unfair by my employer?
Here's the situation: I've worked at my company for 4 1/2 years and I've been very loyal to them. I work in the IT department (3 people) and recently a co-worker that was here 10 years left. Management asked if I would be interested in the position and I said yes. A few weeks later my manger told me that they decided that they would "offer" the job to me and give me the option of taking it or leaving it. After about 6 weeks of hearing "we're working on it" I heard through the "grapevine" that the promotion has been processed and that my raise and position change would take effect today. The problem that I have with this is that they processed everything before they even let me know what they pay will be, what the expectations are, and what the hours are. They just assumed that I would be satisfied with whatever offer they wrote up. Is this fair? What should I do? I'm very irritated about this situation. Does anyone have any advice?
Additional Details
You're correct, I did imply that I would take the job, the problem is, I never received an offer, just an assumption from management that I would take whatever they wanted to give. For all I know, I could have received a pay cut....

As a manger, I personally wouldn't make the same assumptions that your management did but not everyone (outside of HR) understands the difference between interested in an offer and actually accepting an offer. I suggest that you assume for the time being that a true misunderstanding has taken place. Management has nothing to gain from blindsiding an employee they clearly think highly enough to promote. If the terms of the promotion are fair and acceptable, I suggest that you leave this one alone and make a mental note to be much more explicit about your intentions in the future. Your manager did tell you that the terms were non-negotiable so you can let this one go knowing there was nothing else you could have done to maximize the new situation. If you truly don't want this new position, meet with your manager and let him or her know that there has been some type of misunderstanding about the transition process and diplomatically explain the reasons why you can't accept the "offer". The danger in presenting your grievances any less delicately is that you might be perceived as being ungrateful for being considered for the promotion in the first place. Also, remember to hide any irritation you continue to feel when you speak to your manager; the aggressive approach may pay-off in the short-term but has the potential to harm your long-term prospects at this company.

They offered you the position.

You said yes.

You didn't look at any pay/vacation/benefits package before you accepted.

If you are irritated with it, you could go in (6 WEEKS after accepting the position) with pay questions etc but it sounds like they already took care of all that for you.

Hope you don't get stiffed too badly...

Could be either way. May be they think after 4+ years that you know all about the job, or they may have forgotten that step assuming your "yes" meant yes, or they may be trying to box you into a lousy job. You may want to mention to someone you're comfortable with in management what you've heard and ask if they can discuss the specifics first.

Now I know why you are in IT and not Management. It amazes me to see how many people out there have no idea how to ask questions. What did you think they were going to do? After 6 weeks of We are taking care of it, you are going to get whatever they give you. Does this company have a HR department?

In case you did not know, you are allowed to ask questions and you deserve answers. You could have sent emails so that you could document what was concerning you.

On the other hand they could have brought in someone who is younger then you, with less experience and given them more money then you are making. So be happy that you have a stinking job!

Lex
This is down to you just accepting the job and not asking for specifics. You implied that you would take what was offered. You might want to have a chat with the manager and present your case in a conversational way asking if there's any leeway for negotiations.
