Am I over reacting?....?
I am a 45 year old white female who is employed by a retail chain that carries various electronics and household products. My job is in appliances and I am part time but always work more than 40 hours a week plus alot of overtime but no benefits. After being employed for more than 2 years I found out that a 17 year old( who hired on 6 months ago and has no work permit)for my department was given $8.50 an hour, I only average $8.71. When I asked for a raise but my boss told me our department was not seling enough products to make corporate happy enough to give me a raise even though I have sold more than anyone else in the department. I also discovered that another employee with little time is making more than I am. I have tried to put in for computer department openings or transfer to another department, but there are no openings. Needles to say I am placing my 2 weeks notice today and I am looking for a different employer. My question is,"Am I over reacting?"

Well, you're obviously not making any headway with this company, so no. Anything that motivates you to change (careers or yourself) is a good thing.

They're probably giving them a raise because they can get more years of service out of them because they're younger.

You are not over reacting, thats a slap in the face. They are using you.If it were me I would quit and I wouldn't be nice enough to give notice.

Pancake Man
no, you arent over reacting. But I suppose its hard work for a 16 year old

You have every right to be upset! However, it is very hard to find any kind of job that pays more than minimum wage. The job market is really tight right now. If you need the job to support you or contribute to the family household I would wait until you have another job before giving notice. If your just working to have something to do then I would say give that 2 week notice and in the exit interview (if they have them) make sure that someone other than you supervisor knows what is going on. I would maybe even call the headquarters and talk to someone. Do it in a way that it won't come back and bite you in the rear! Good Luck with either getting that much deserved raise or finding a new job!

I would wait to give notice until you have another job lined up.

Personally, I would be upset too. I would speak with the general manager of your company and discuss the situation honestly, in a friendly manner. If this does not work, then you need to weigh your options.

1) The job market is very tight right at this moment.
2) Do you need this job to pay your bills/rent/etc? If so, DO NOT quit your job no matter how frustrated you are. Wait until you have another job lined up to give them your notice. It is always much much easier to find a job when you are currently employed. If you arent employed, then it scares potential employers even if you have an excellent rebuttal.
3) Consider your schedule. Is there an opportunity for you to advance your education while working at that job because they are flexibile with you?
4) Do you like your job? If you do, then take yourself out of the politics and have fun doing your own thing.

Hope this helps.
