I received a letter and check from Americal Sweepstakes. The letter stated that I won $100000.00. The check was for $2,800.00 and said that was for fees, taxes, insurance and duty. Is this a scam? |

I had a similar experience and still have the check for $1990.00. The check appeared to be a good check. I called the "sponsoring company" who issued the check and they informed me that they had recently had a bunch of checks stolen and that the situation was being investigated because the checks were showing up due to a sweepstakes scam. These scams used to work by enticing mostly older citizens to believe that they had won some phenomenal amount of money but in order to claim their prize they had to send [X] amount of money to an address to pay fees, taxes and insurance, etc. In many cases this worked and a lot of seniors were bilked out of thousands of dollars. Your case is like the incident I had. They want to see if you can cash the check and send the money to a prearranged address or deposit the check in your account and send your personal check for the prescribed amount. Either way they are involving you in a crime and if you deposit the check (which will probably be the only thing the bank will allow, if that) and send your own check, the first check will be no good and your bank account will be debited for the amount and you will have been scammed out of $2800.00. I kept my check just in case anything else came up about it, because they are using personal information about their intended victims and in that sense involving you. There is so much more that I could say, but it IS a scam and I'll bet you, like me, are a senior citizen. |

Sounds like a scam to me! Do they ask for any account numbers? Are you to cash the check and return the money to cover the fees? If yes to either of those questions it is definately a scam!! Remember, if something sounds too good to be true, it most likely is!!! |
