clkron | Any one want to hurt the large oil companies and get gas back down in price? |
We all need to stop buying gas from the large companies. Dont fill up at Mobil or Exxon gas stations. THe more we use the smaller ones for gas and fuel the more the larger one will be hurting. They have all had record 1st quarter profits the largest being 22 billon dollars from 1 company. So if you look at that number of 22 billon and cut that in half to 11 billon that would mean that gas could still be sold at 1.50-1.75 and still be making a prrofit. The next thing you hear is the refineires cant keep up with the making of gas. Will with the 22 billon in profit from the 1st quarter maybe the oil compaines should build some more refineires. Moral of this story is try not to buy gas/fuel from the large company. Lets all hrt them where they hurt all of us and thats in the wallet. |

I really don't think that is going to do anything. You know the smaller companies are reselling refined gas that originally came from the large oil company ventures anyway right? |

Many small gas stations have to buy their gas from large companies. Unless you know for sure, you're probably still paying them.
There are very strict regulations and requirements that must be met, as well there should be, before a new refinery can be built. Most of the companies consider this process to be too troublesome.
The oil companies are huge and making loads of money because we, the consumers, put them in that position. It's up to us to find alternatives to fossil fuels, carpool, etc. People are slow to change. It would be great to blame them, but we did this. They just profited from it. This is the way capitalism works. We're addicted to oil. |

No, not really. Why don't we wipe out the oil companies then we can all walk.
You really need to get a grasp of the difference between profit margin and profit. The oil companies and refineries make a few cents per gallon. Taxes on gasoline are 5 to 7 times the profit per gallon. Why aren't you complaining about the taxes on gasoline? |

the only way the price of something changes is if there is a change to its supply or demand. If the whole driving population took the bus or train for a month or two, you *might* see a drop.....or then again, maybe the Chinese will just buy whatever we don't.
....and can you imagine how hard it would be to get a majority of the US population to do ANYTHING? |

I founded a telecommuting consulting firm because by companies allow or even requiring employees to reduce their driving back and forth to work is the only REAL way we can make a significant impact on this that is permanent. Commuting makes up the majority of our driving, we reduce that, we reduce the need for oil.
I am actually paying (YES PAYING) cash to employees if they can convince their company HR or Finance principals to allow me to come in and make a presentation on how to convert employees to telecommuting status. If anyone is interested they can visit

This is a REAL opportunity, and the requirements are just for a certian size company in certian states (new states are continually being added as we recruit staff). |

IT DOESNT WORK EITHER.
These are two of the largest gasoline companies in America.
They sell their gasoline to local, small and independent gasoline shops all across America. Odds are, no matter what the outside of the station says... it sells you gasoline from BP, EXXON, MOBIL, CONOCO or SHELL.
Further, even if you could effect the price of gasoline from one of these producers, all you are doing is lowering its price temporarily. Which in turn, raises its demand. If you can get 1 or 2 of these companies to lower its price, you are driving up the demand of the other three. So while the companies you are avoiding get cheaper - temporarily - the places you are going will start charging more - because you are making a run on their product. Once you switch back to the companies that you were boycotting, they will raise their prices to the competitors.

There's a movement afoot to stop buying from EXXON in June. I'd like to see it work just for sh*ts and giggles. However, If we buy gas from the little guys then the little guys will have to buy more from EXXON or another refiner and they still make the money. Many of the EXXON stations you buy gas from are small businesses, not EXXON corporate stores. You could very well end up hurting a local businessman. |

Yes, we can hurt them. Heres how....
There are over 300 million people in the United states. Over 100 million have cars etc. maybe more....If we dont buy gas for one day......we full up a few days before and just dont buy gas for 1 day.....these companies would not only loose 22 billion dollars...they would loose 100's of billions of dollars, which would make them have to either close some refineries or lower gas prices. They wont close refineries so they will lower gas prices.
Let me tell you something...half is better than nothing so if they lower prices they can actually still make the billions.
These companies are just greedy.. There is really no need for gas prices to be that high. Someone mentioned that the taxes on gas is high. BS....the taxes are not higher than the gas prices and these companies still make a profit dont they. Raising gas prices raises the taxes so the more they charge, the more they have to pay in taxes. Yes they make only cents for profits but it adds up....Do your research...Demand and Supply are not the only things that affect gas prices.....
How about the Unites States having over 25 years worth of reserves that they can tap into for the next 2 years to relieve the gas prices at the pumps but of course if they do that...President Bush will loose his "Street credit" with the Saudis....It is all politics and there is nothing that will stop these A.Holes from jacking up the prices and pissing everyone off.........
There I said it... |
