Mr J Man | Any other adults who do not work to their full potential? |
For the past eight years I have ran my own business and I am also a programmer in multiple languages. I have a lot of skills and could probably get a really high paying job. However I learned that those high paying jobs usually require that your head has to explode from stress. Mainly due to office jobs where you have to wake up really early to beat rush hour traffic and have to wear expensive office clothes which have to be dry cleaned.
When I was 18 - 21 years old I worked in warehouse jobs on 2nd shift where the traffic was never bad, and you could just throw on some jeans and a shirt and run out the door instead of prepping for work. So I rather have a lower paying laid back job where I can wear anything I want and have freedom to roam around a warehouse than sitting at a desk two feet away from the a hole boss. Not to mention all of these office jobs seem to take about 20 - 45 minutes to drive to. |

I totally am with you. There is a huge price to getting that six-figure income, and the price is unbearable stress.
I have two degrees and multiple talents and have been asked to international conferences. I could have pushed to be a lot more successful, by external standards, than I am. Right now, in this economy, I am just surviving. But even if and when the economy gets better and there are more opportunities to climb, I would probably be happier working part-time at an art gallery and living on noodles. |

well its all about preference. it just depends on what makes you happy and it seems like you've tried both ends of the spectrum, a mobile and static job. you should go with what you want.
i am about to go from a physical job... free to roam (driving around all day, fixing things for people etc.) to 1/2 office 1/2 mobile job. i havent done an office job before so it will be interesting to see the difference but at least i wont be stuck in one place. i am trying it to find what suits me best.
your question and statement suggests that from wanting such a job you wont be working to your full potential. but it seems to be like full potential is the capacity is the point at which the utilisation of your abilities is in equilibrium with your satisfaction for the task in hand.
many high paid jobs do come with stress because not that many people are really passionate about work, and there are even less who find and end up in the job that they are truely passionate about. full potential will never be achieved in such high paying jobs were satisfaction cannot be attained because it will not be sustainable for the long term. for example, trying to do a job you hate because it pays well and the benefits are excellent will not last you with good health for a 40 year duration, a duration most people have to work. even if you do manage that, your health... possibly mental health.. will have deteriorated at which point.
really you should be aiming to find the best paying and benefited job possible which simultaneously meets your motivational and satisfaction needs. if that means being paid lower than an alternative job then so be it. however im not sure what direct comparisons between two different jobs and their pay can be made as to which is the most preferential - all things considered. |
