Any tips for the corporate world?
I'm getting ready to start an entry-level job at a big corporation. Any pitfalls to look out for? Any advice?
Additional Details
Great answers so far!!! When I was waiting to interview for the job, I saw some people get off a corporate jet... That's where I want to be. I think I'll need to get a BS or MBA, but they have tuition reimbursement so maybe I'll be able to do it for free.

Just be professional and do not get involved in any gossiping or bad mouthing either the company or your co workers... stay focused and you should be OK. I echo the other answer when they said to not date anyone you work with -- or as we say - Don't dip your pen in company ink! That is the kiss of death to a professional and does not look good to your superiors. Good luck!!!

I've been in the corporate world for 15 years. Here is list for a new person;

-You will be accepted quickly if you do not come into the corporate world and act like a know-it-all. Not saying you WOULD do that, but I have seen many young whipper-snappers (myself included) fresh out of college enter the workforce with this attitude and get "humbled" very quickly.

-You will be trusted above others if you do not get caught up in any gossip or small-talk that occurs in the office.

-Be excited about, and greatful for this opportunity, and be willing to learn. People love to show you what they know if you are interested.

-You can build loyalty and dependability if you follow the rules; i.e. at work on time, back from lunch on time, etc., regardless of whether everyone else does it. It will be noticed, I promise.

-You will increase your chances of having your career followed and noticed if you acknowledge any of the "CE's", like CEO, CFO, CMO, CPO, etc., and introduce yourself.

-LEARN as much as you can about the company BEFORE you start there. Understanding your livelihood is key to your success.

-Be polite and appreciative to those around you. Respect and manners can go a long way.

-Be precise, accurate and honest with any information that is required from you. Double and triple check your work.

I think this about covers it. Welcome to the corporate world! :)

Don't place your faith in corporate America. You are only a number. They will pay you just enough so you don't quit and you will do just enough so you don't get fired. Additionally, you will be building the dreams of your company, not yours. I guarantee the boss/ceo will not be working as hard as you are!

My advice - "Work harder on yourself than you do on your job. If you work hard on your job, you can make a living. If you work hard on yourself you can make a fortune." - Jim Rohn

Don't allow your job to determine your value. It's called a salary. It is the value of the job, not your skill. Most people will trade their precious time for a salary all of their lives and wonder where the time went and why they were never able to do all the things in life they wanted to do when they were younger.

Best wishes...

Advice: Work hard, do your research, be willing to go above and beyond, get to know all departments and how they interact with each other, introduce yourself to the key people in these departments, don't play politics, and watch your back.

Remember..you are there to work..not make friends (even though that can of course happen). Be courteous to all but intimate with few. And no matter what you do..DON'T DATE ANYONE YOU WORK WITH!! lol
Seriously, be open and take in as much as you can. Try to adapt to the specific culture there at the corporation.

If U gettting ready to go out of town for a job corp then do what it do then don't worry about a thing . Everything is going to be okay . If u have family down here then what about taking them with u or just ask if they want to left if they don't then tell your boss that I'm sorry about i can't take this job.
