Miz_Kassandra | Anyone agree that this is SO wrong? |
Wal-Mart, the largest retailer in the world, has asked for and received permission to join the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.
Wal-Mart will give homosexual-owned businesses special treatment when making purchases. Companies not owned by homosexuals will be moved down the list.
Okay, IN MY OPINION.... to promote any ONE group, whether it's homosexuals, heterosexuals, blacks, whites, asians, etc.... it's prejudice?! And now to say "Since your company is not GAY, we wont buy from you." HELLO?
Why limit yourself to promoting anyone? Just knock off promoting, screw it all, and just sell cheap crap. Geez. Additional Details My Source:

now this is discrimination against straight people! this si so stupid, you can't give enyone a preference! i totally agree with gay people rights and i have many gay friends, but why should they be a priority. Everyone should be the same. |

Wal-Mart is so huge they really don't care what people think about them and the way they handle their business. |

Lemme guess- you're not for affirmative action wrt college admissions or hiring either, right? I'm with ya sister. It's not fair. The company with the best crap/price should win. I'm actually surprised that Walmart would do this. I thought their main focus was lowest price, end of story. |

I have no idea if there's any truth in this, but don't worry, Wal Mart doesn't care about gays, they care about money. They will continue to give preferential treatment to companies where they can get schlocky crap for cheap and pass it on to consumers for a profit in their big butt ugly stores. |

Wal- Mart is HUGE organization, business etc., did it ever occur to you that maybe this is a "political" move. At it's worst, that's what I would call it, at it's best a "morally and politically correct move" but hey what do i know maybe the powers that be within Wal- Mart can't wait for for next years "anual" parade....... |

I think Wal-Mart is doing this as a way to help a minority business. Many companies give small and minority owed businesses a slight benefit over others, as a means of helping those businesses survive in the market. Minority businesses are normally identified as being owned by women or racial/ethnic groups. Considering the huge number of independent/small businesses that have had to close as a result of Wal-mart coming into their regions, this is really a small step on Wal-mart's part.
Some states/cities mandate that larger companies offer some benefits to small/minority businesses so that they can have a better shot in the market, or else it would be all large corporations doing business among them. For example, the company I work for, has to have at least 10% of third party work, done by a “minority/woman owned business.” In the grand scale of a project, 10% is really not that much, but it allows that smaller business the chance to have more incoming business.
The "Homosexual" title, is just so that all small business' can benefit, because a Gay White Male owed business may fall through the cracks because a white male isn't considered a minority, but Wal-Mart wants to point out that as a Homosexual the business owner should have the same benefits that other minority business owners have.
Don't look at it as one group being promoted over another, but as independently owed businesses getting the first crack at some of Wal-Mart's needs. These types of regulations are meant to maintain the open market aspect of American Commercialism. |

yes, i think it's wrong. especially since they are such a huge corporation! i like that they are trying to lend a hand, but i think it's kinda discriminating the way they're doing it. |

i don't know that their recieving permission to be endorsed by gay vendors actually results in preferential treatment to those vendors. i would want to know way more info, like whether they subcribe to a number of such business networking type orgs in order to be and a politically correct reputation on a number of minority fronts. |

The reason Wal Mart, along with many other huge corporations, joined the NGLCC is to promote diversity throughout all levels of their supply chain. Wal Mart is only one of many well known corporations who belong: also included are IBM, Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase, American Airlines, Intel, Wyndham Hotels, Lehman Brothers, Motorola, Merrill Lynch, American Express, Cisco Systems, Avis, Orbitz, Intuit, Kodak and Fannie Mae (this is from the NGLCC website).
This day and age, it's only good business sense to diversify. It's kind of a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" prospect, though. While these companies have upped their stature with minorities, they may have also offended those who feel their positions have been threatened by minorities.
Welcome to American business! |

Since I haven't seen anything relating to this I will take your for it, but when making claims like this you should really source your material. Now having said that. Wla-Mart is a business, and so long as their business practices are not forbidden by law then they are justified. When you are in business who you buy from or award contracts to is not open to interpretation unless it involves a government contract. Trust me, if the shareholders don't like it, it won't last for long. I have a hard time believing this though, because if it is true it will be another public relations disaster for Wal-Mart. |
