Like in the Mac/PC commercials.
I've watched a couple of them now and it seems like they want to make people not buy PCs instead of making people want to buy Macs....

Apple Iphone: Will it pitilessly crush the phone market beneath the weight of its own superiority?
No, the phone industry is too complex and competitive.
Also, support for a phone system is too expensive for Apple offer competitive rates. It's a novelty for now.
However, I do look forward to cell phone towers replacing these nasty old Ma Belle telephone poles.

No because everytime you need to charge the battery you'll have to send it back to apple. lol.

Not at $400.

If they manage to steal the iPhone name from Cisco, maybe. (I guess the rules don't apply to Jobs/Apple -- imagine if Microsoft tried to launch a product called the Mac). Of course, Jobs will be in jail for cheating on his stock options but I guess the Appleheads will buy it anyway like the sheep that they are.

No because it is not a revolutionary gadget. My phone has does everything the iPhone does apart from play movies. I have a television set with cable tv, a dvd player and vcr why would I sit for 2hours or more squinting at a tiny screen watching a movie by myself (because noone else would be able to watch it with me on the tiny screen) in danger of the battery dying at any moment (coz let's face it they always conk out when you least expect it!)?!
I don't think it will catch on. People will succumb to peer pressure and get their hands on one at any cost but it will be just to satisfy their materialistic greed and not to meet a specific technological need. Most people will stick with their old faithful Nokia and be done with it.

Free phone or 400 dollar plus phone? Lets see free phone!
If they really want to sell me something how about a computer that is in a pair of sunglasses and the glasses are a bigcreen tv and my cell phone is intergrated and I can have live chat and live view at the same time. And be working in a grassy field while watching TV and using a program at the same time. For under a grand and there is no service fees or contracts. And it works on normal power or duracells. Now that would be a innovation.
