Are Supermarkets Helping To Make The World a Better Place?

I'm reading a book called 'Tescopoly' at the moment which would definitely disagree. There are some startling facts in there about how Tescos is monopolising the world and stopping small businesses. I'm only part of the way through it, but already its discussing the distrusting and impersonal qualities that supermarkets have.

Something in there said that only 24% of shoppers in Tesco were satisfyed, 56% were bored and 52% were frustrated etc.

So, I don't think supermarkets are at all helping the world to be honest, but I'm slightly hypocritical, as I still find myself in them fairly regularly.

Definately NOT, they are money grabbing louse's, who run a very profitable business on a shoestring!!

No they have the opposite effect....they have a lot to answer for..in 10yrs everyone with a brain cell will be calling for small little green grocers, butchers etc...affluent areas already see the benefits of these and tend to have loads of small little family owned places...probably why fat people are only prevelant in poor areas with large asda's.....sad situation....

Definitely not. In some ways they can be more convenient than traditional shops as everything is in one place and you can have home delivery etc, but I don't like the way that large supermarkets such as Tesco try to bleed dry their opponents.

For example, not far from where I live, Tesco keep putting in a planning application to build a store; it keeps getting rejected by the local council, but Tesco keep appealing against the decision. It is as if they want to wear the down the patience of the council and the local population (many of whom are opposed to the new store).

They also pay farmers and suppliers low prices for their goods.

Also, in Thailand, Tesco are harrassing and intimidating journalists who oppose the expansion of Tesco stores in the country. They are currently prosecuting 2 Thai jounalists for the equivalent of £16m for writing articles criticising them.
