catweazle | Are business people inately amoral orduzthe profit motive TRUMP all ethical concerns in their business studies |
nature or nurture!?......
...are those who are attracted to business, deficient in their ethical make-up...before they ever get to business schools and universities.......?
........or is their business education, devoid of any ethical considerations...and so ..generating amoral action/strategies, at the top of all businesses?
ie: are they taught/encouraged to be amoral, by their very course material?...or is it just that more amoral people are attracted into business than other line of work?
and are they taught that the greed of shareholders,is "obviously"[!] to be put above any reponsibility to the wider community...and the wider world? |

As a business person, I take offense when people question my own ethics solely for that reason. It demonstrates a pre-conceived prejudice that could have only be driven by sour grapes about those who have more than you. It also demonstrates that "the offended" possess more GREED than those they condemn as "greedy" who are trying to make an honest profit. |

Profit for businesses and shareholders is t he prime concern of any company.Any ethical factors that affect the bottom line profit will be ignored. To not follow this line would severely affect the business career of the person so minded.Profit will always be placed above customer satisfaction and service in the priority of things. This is one of the main results of being in a capitalistic society. |

Right on all fronts. Business is there to generate money and if you are motivated to do this above all other issues then you will get rich. Some folk don't think like this and they will not get rich. I suppose you say to the wealth seekers, 'If that is what turns you on, OK.' However in the long run they are the losers, socially, culturally, spiritually and morally. There are no pockets in a shroud and when all is said and done all the wealth they have ammassed ends up in someone else's pocket. Stuff riches, stuff business and have a LIFE. |

Ideally, busineses are supposed to be socially responsible by trying to take part in the process of developing the community in which they operate. But nowadays, you have many firms doing business with nonchallant attitude. The question of morality did not even arise in the first place. |

well ... they have potential, and they get perfect in schools ... potential is being greedy and selfish, and they develop those personal characteristics in an entirely justified (by their own principles) and efficient way of thinking ... or they're just very competitive, and since they don't have any other qualities, they chose this fight ... but that's also selfish thinking!
I could never be good in a business school ... I wouldn't be interested! and I would be annoyed and irritated all the time ... this last few days I'm seriously thinking of which masters studies I want to go to, and "culture management" sounds as the most reasonable thing, but I can't make myself do it ... it's just too close to typical advertising brain washing, it's using culture to make money, and I think of it as betray ... but I'd be earning well ... blah ... I think I'll go to "applied ethics" after-all ... I will have a job, but I won't be earning much, and that's OK ... at least I'll be going to bed every night feeling good about myself ... and I must say, I'm lucky to be living with a boyfriend who is supportive ... he doesn't care how much I'm earning, he's not a business type either (or I don't think I could be with him), but is lucky to have a job that is creative (I mean, really creative not only in making money) and pays well ...
so, to be successful businessmen, you have to be motivated (as in anything else), and if you're thinking about anyone but yourself you can't be good at it, your motivation would have to go toward something else! Sometimes, they mask that "yourself" in "thinking abut your children's future" .. they always need a way to rationalise it so they can live with themselves, because they usually (deep down inside) do know that they're doing something wrong, the only question is how do they decide to deal with it ... contributing to NGO ... helping organisations for development of 3rd world countries because they own shares in Nike ... or they promote ideas of: stronger wins, that's the way of nature ... |
