nestor_cruz | Are manufacturers stupid? One example, why don't they make all cans stackable, like coke cans? |
Another stupidity: Why are there Millions (exagerated) of different allen key sizes? |

YES! They are ALL STUPID!
We couldn't use our a/c because the drip pan was made of corrodable material!
Someone should start a website for consumers to make suggestions/complaints. You game? |

And another: Why are some car gas-tanks on the driver's side and some on passenger's side? They should all be driver's side.
The stackable cans are simpler to manufacture - the bottom and sides are punched out of a single metal disk and the cap is separate. The ones that aren't stackable are 3-piece, separate end caps and a middle that has to be bent around and welded.
Not just different sizes, but different "heads", i.e. standard hex and "torx" - whose bright idea was that? |

Dumb answer, Joey. The cases are stackable- that's all the manufacturers care about. The cans used to be stackable, but they changed/improved them so they were easier to sip out of. |

I am not sure, what makes you think, manufacturers are stupid. First of all, your premise, that, Coke always, uses cans, is wrong. It is different, for different regions & culture. It is decided, according, to the practice & practicability, of that region / country. |

It's not stupidity, it's $$$!
While it's always fun to find stupid things done by Corporate America (there are plenty) this is not one of them. The companies know that the cans which are not stackable can be an issue for some consumers and/or retailers. After all, the employees of the company often use the products, too. And you will see some companies switching over to more stackable cans (i.e many canned fruit and vegetable brands have switched).
The issue is, as always, money. First, you would never pay more for a stackable can- it's not that important. Second, often the new cans won't run on the same line as the old cans. If that is the case, then the manufacturer would have to pay to modify machinery. Beyond that, if there is a substantial change in the can, this could impact the case the cans are packed in- yes, causing still more changes and costs. All this to deliver what is a pretty small benefit overall to the consumer.
Where you will see changes come quickly is if the retailer presses for them- i.e they have problems with the cans/cases not stacking. That's a bigger concern for the manufacturer than your issue.
Allen wrenches? I think you will find the same logic- there is no incentive to spend the time and energy to standardize. Companies don't communicate well within the organization about important things. What are the odds they would spend time and money to worry about something like an allen wrench- again, no impact on you, the retailer or them since I'm sure they use a wrench that is standard for whomever makes product for them. |
