Kandyce | Are rebates ethical? |
Additional Details The reason I ask is because I am a college student and my professor asked the question if cash rebates were ethical for businesses to use.

No since getting your hard earned money back is always horrible. |

Your professor asked that question? What a stupid question to ask. Are they ethical? lol..I use rebates every time I get a chance to. I have saved a lot of money, already this year. I used a rebate, when I bought my new computer, and when I bought my LCD monitor..I have always gotten my rebate checks. I make a copy of everyone of them, for my records, and if there is any question about it later. I do my rebates over the internet. I usually find the rebates, in our local paper, or a flyer that company's send in the mail..I also use promo codes, when purchasing an item over the internet. I save $5.00 every time I need ink, for my printer. I also use store coupons, purchase one, get one free..etc. etc. from cvs, or other stores, that have them. I think it in unethical, NOT to use them.. |

Yes. Companies rely on you not applying for your rebate because you may not want to take the time to fill out the papers. Or you think it's too much of a hazzle. They rely on that. Get the rebate. It's your money. |

I HATE rebates!!!
I will not buy anything ever again with a rebate, because they refuse to give it to you most of the time.

I don't know how the corporation do the accounting, but, it may be a way for the individual stores to keep the revenue. (If you give customers discount up front, the store revenue will go down, but, if you give them rebate, the stores still show profits before rebate. The corporation will send rebate and probably treat it as expense.) You often hear store sales are up or down for the quarter? It's very important for the company stock price. Also by sending rebate 6-10 weeks later, the company gets to keep the money. Let's say $20 rebate for 3000 people, that is 60,000 they get to use for 6-10 weeks. |

Rebates ehhh? I've been in electronics sales for a long time and I can tell you they just make rebates because they can show a lower price in thier adds to get you in the door because they burry the mail in rebate crap in the small print. Then once you're in the store they know they might be able to bait and switch half of your customers. And of those that do go ahead with the rebate, they know only half of them get the paperwork and UPC's together and mail them in on time. And if your paperwork or reciepts or anything they can think of is out of order they don't send a check to those few people that actually bought the product and tried to get the rebate. All in all, they are a scam. |

why wouldn't they be? |

No, they tell people they are going to get money back for purchasing an item. Most people never get the rebates. If they intended to give you money back, then why not give you the money back at purchase rather then deal with the paperwork of giving it back latter on?
A rebate offers an unfair advantage to products that just aren't worth what they actual cost. If you are lucky enough to get a rebate their are strings attached like having to give out your mailing address to a company with questionable morals. |

The question asked about the 'ethics' regarding rebates, not the value.
To answer this question, ask yourself why a company offers a rebate as opposed to simply lowering the price in the first place. There is more than one reason.
If the company is offering the rebate to determine the demographics based on the information they receive on the rebate form, then I would qualify that as ethical.
If the company is using the information to create and sell a mailing list, especially through a third party, then I would say no.
Even when a disclosure statement says personal information will not be sold, given, traded, etc. to another company, remember that it is 100% LEGAL for a company to provide personal information to an associate company, and that associate company my then distribute the information to others, as the associate company has made no claims that they will not do so.
The answer to your question has to take into account the reason the rebate is offered in the first place, and as you can see, there is no right answer, as the conditions pertaining to the rebate offer determines whether or not ethics becomes an issue. |
