Are the databases of insurance & personal banking depts of major banks connected; for instance if you bank?
with someone like Natwest and then unknowingly take out car insurance with them, will the banking section ever know you have car insurance with them also...or in huge banking corporations will this match never come up on their database?

Yes. They all share information on everyone for credit reference. And yes if you have 2 car insurance policies for the same vehicle it would be flagged and you won't get paid out in a claim.

They will however let you pay for 2 (or more) policies, just not honour them as all of their contracts stipulate they don't have to if they think you're trying to defraud them. Not if they are defrauding you.

WITHIN the company, they can share the information, and most do.

BETWEEN companies, they cannot due to privacy laws.

There is a lot of data sharing. Make a donation to charity and see how much junk mail you get from all the others. Car insurance and MOT certificates are data shared with the DVLA. All banking virtually is data shared with the Inland revenue and customs and excise services.
I read someone they take a spoonful of sewage from a wealthy area analyse it and they find cocaine - but different drugs in poorer areas. You can't crap without them spying on you. GCHQ picked up a cell phone call from Spain to Germany just after Madeleine McCann went missing - mentioning her name.

Banks are probably the most careful about protecting your privacy.

Following written policy employees are given access only to the data they need to do their job. Someone selling car insurance probably is authorized to look at some of your banking information, unless you specify otherwise.

A database will use a customer key, so all your products could be accessed by using that key (basically account #). 'Identity management' software prevents individuals from seeing data they are not authorized to see.

Most major corporations will have annual training on this also.

Typically major financial services organisations such as insurance companies and banks maintain relational databases so that all of a customers associations such as deposit accounts, working accounts, loans and insurances are all linked to a single customer record in some way. The level of sophistication will vary from organisation to organisation.

Yes.

When you sign an agreement with a large company such as the RBS Group it does state that they will use information held within the group to check your status.

Hello,

(ANS) Banking systems are NOT as far as I am aware inter-connected with the insurance database systems. They have to be kept separate for UK data protection & privacy rules & laws.

**Banks can & do exchange a certain level of information because a customer can draw money from one ATM from say Natwest and yet be a customer with HSBC etc. But normally banks only exchange customer personal details when accounts are moved from one provider to another. Otherwise banks do not exchange customer details directly.

**YES! when it comes to insurance companies. Insurance companies do indeed exchange customer details directly when customers seek a new policy. They can check your insurance history, this is done by a national industry wide insurance database system. This has been created or allowed by law to prevent fraud which has been rife for decades and its this level of false claims that puts up premiums to genuine customers.

**no! Credit reference agencies (there are only x4 in the UK) are separate again from both the banks & insurance companies. Companies such as Experien, they to are prevented from exchanging data due to data protection laws. There job is to provide a risk assessment for the benefit of other financial organizations, this helps them make lending decisions when it comes to loans to individuals.
