Are the oil companies making too much profit?
Just noticed the price of oil has dropped to below $100 a barrel, a drop of $50 in two months, yet fuel prices at the pump have dropped a miserly 9p a litre at my garage. I would really like someone to come on here from the oil companies and tell me how they can justify such high prices ( bet they don't).

I agree with you that the price per barrel is only reflected at the pumps immediately when it goes up. When the price per barrel goes down it is not reflected at the pumps immediately.

I think the oil companies are making too much profit and taking advantage of people. I hope we have an alternative quick so all these crooks lose their shirts!

They don't have to justify profits and they don't. People need gas, and will buy it.

Check out definitions of the following :-
Capitalism / Communism
Competition / Monopoly
Supply / Demand

Once you have understood the above, you may realise how nonsensical your question is :-)

Oil companies do not make as much profit as other industries such as telecom or IT companies percentage wise. They are however very very large and so their net profits are large.

Being huge companies though, they have billions of shares and profits must be split billions of time so that each share holder gets a small portion.

Maybe a better question is is the oil industry too big?

Of course they are!
EONs boss publicly joked about how much money they make from an energy crisis.
Time for government intervention?
You would think so.
BUT
Don't they collect VAT on the inflated prices?

They can charge whatever they want, and there's nothing we can do about it. They're making record profits, and we're not using any more fuel than we use to. Our useless politicians aren't going to help us, they're bought and paid for by the oil companies.

john boy
They don't care. It's all about money...

no

what a stupid question

they need more money so they can pay more people 2 get the oil

Almost to the point of absolutely NO RETURN, oil companies now have replaced our government as the NUMBER ONE influence on American life as we ever knew it thereby taking power out of the hands of the populace via the politicians who are suppose to have the junk between their legs to put them in their place and assuming their RIGHTFUL role as the makers and formulators of POWER in a very public, very boldfaced and very crude manner.

We now know, where the TRUE POWER lies in our country because NO ONE, no not ONE politician has stood up to the country and denounced what is going on at the pump on the backs of the honest hard working populace of the United States.

We are, and get used to it, ON OUR OWN......

Welcome to America, now kneel down and worship your GOD: MONEY.

Of course they are but they must invest in alternative energy for THEIR future.

Most large companies that report huge profits are not really performing as well as their shareholders would hope. These companies returns on the amount of funds invested (used) are substantially lower than the interest rates most people earn on their savings.

BHP shares are selling at $36.00 at present and the company just declared a dividend of 41 cents. This represents an interest rate of 1.138% pa. You would not save your money with a bank that offered you that sort of interest rate would you?

The price of oil is determined by market forces - supply and demand. If war was declared tomorrow between two world powers the price of oil would more than likely double over night. This would happen because there would be an urgent need for more oil by the two countries going to war.

A large percentage of the price we pay for petrol at the bowser goes to the government in the way of excise duty and taxes. The oil companies are not the ones making all the money.
