One of my husband's friends used to work on a pig farm. He quit after an old male hog attacked him and he almost broke his back (instead he had 3 cracked vertabrae). If you are sensitive to gross stuff, don't read the second paragraph, it's stuff he's told me about what he did there.
Here goes. He told me his job was basically to kill deformed or sick piglets, he said typically you would just kill them with a shovel. I didn't want him to give me specifics, it made me feel sick to the stomach when he talked about it. He made a really decent pay check, it was the highest paying job he could find (he lived in a very rural area). He was the only person working, supporting a 5 person household. I don't think he really liked his job, but he had to do it, and I do think he was somewhat cold and heartless to still be able to kill animals.
He isn't a close friend of mine at all, he's just an acquaintance I know through my husband.
I think you might like to read a few books, I would really reccommend "Skinny B****" as well as "Fast Food Nation". I would also reccomend some more interesting reads by a woman named Marion Nestle, a former collaborator with the USDA and a nutritionist, who reveals a lot of scathing information about the meat industry and it's collaborations with the USDA. Her books include "Food Politics" (a must for any vegetarian or vegan) and "What to Eat" (just interesting facts). What's most fascinating is that she herself is still an omnivoure, thereby solidifying my belief that she is telling the truth and NOT spreading vegetarian "propaganda", as other book authors have been accused of doing. |

The woman who cleans my office also cleans a local processing plant (she supervises a team of employees). The plant processes chickens, and she said there is a lot of blood every night that has to be cleaned up. It's obviously a real mess.
No, she does not have a nice pay check. No, she does not have pets. On the other hand, she does have a job and she does support her family. (I know because I've asked her these things myself.) |
