BOK CHOY | As a manager, should you be more concerned about the attitudes of your subordinates, or their behaviors? |
|

Actually both are equaly important. Their attitudes and behavior are based on each other. If you can improve their attitude the bahavior changes. Easier to do than adjusting behavior.
Adjusting behavior through work rules and policies can change attitudes.
It goes hand in hand. Working on both in pieces can result in quick changes to create a better employee. You must see the entire picture before acting on either problem.
Getting to know the person could give insights to areas outside of work that may be creating the issues you see at work. Helping in that area could change everything.
Don't get involved in their outside life, but talking with them, some incentive time off to take care of issue could go a long ways towards the employees developement at work. |

Attitude is behavior. I never met an employee who had 'tude that behaved in other capacities. If they had attitude, I always received customer complaints. Nobody with attitude ever lasted under my management. Well, I never hired anyone with attitude in the first place. |

you cant really dictate attitudes , you can control behavior . |

I dont think its up to management to 'control'. Define expectations, promote good behaviors, provide tangible timely and equitable repercussions for adverse behaviors, and leave the rest alone. Attitudes follow. If someone comes in who inst interested in playing by the rules, eventually they'll break them. And when the rules are common sense and bought into by the population they are direction towards, the individual has no power to influence the group.
If the whole group is obviously unhappy, but not breaking the rules, they may need to be heard. If never hurt any manager to ask a person who they felt about how things are going for them. There is clearly a case for addressing both attitude and behavior. |
