Conceivably, it could be said that there are no "bad" decisions - only informed and uninformed decisions. Doing the proper research will allow you to make an informed decision and hopefully achieve the desired outcome. Conversely, doing no research increases the chances of an unfavorable result. Ultimately, as a manager, your leadership will be looking to you for decisions. It's up to you whether you provide an informed or uniformed one. |

I agree with Shane and I will take it one step further. Take the time to find out the key business drivers (areas of focus) of your business, department and your boss and his boss. In those areas be the most careful, ask questions, be as informed as possible.
One other point. Just because people work for you, does not mean that they do not have valuable opinions. Ultimately, the decision will be yours, but if someone on your staff has been doing it for years ask them. It will not make you look week, they will respect you more for it.
And lastly, if you just don't know, tell your boss that. Say "Boss, I don't know the answer to this one, which way would you go?" and listen. Doing that once or twice will be fine with them. Just don't do it over and over on the same topic, then you will be seen as scared to make a decision and that could kill your chances for further growth. |

It is simply impossible. As a manager, you are paid to make decisions. All decisions are based on incomplete and sometimes inaccurate information. This leads to bad decisions. How do you get good at making good decisions? By making bad ones! |

Don't decide anything. Make your subordinates (or superiors)decide. If it turns out wrong, they did it not you. If it turns out right, take the credit for your "enlightened leadership" and "wisdom." |
