DAR76 | Assistant sleeping at desk? |
Here’s the situation. I am a supervisor for a 2-person department that is very slow. I have been finding my assistant (been here for 18 years) sleeping at the front desk where she is supposed to greet and help other employees with requests. I spoke with her about how inappropriate this was for her to be blatantly dozing at her desk. She brushed it off and told me “she would be the one in trouble if anyone found her sleeping, so don’t worry about it.” I had to explain to her that I was the supervisor of the office and that I would be in trouble for not supervising! I brought it up with my director to cover my end just in case an employee walks in to see her napping and reports it to H.R. or my director. My director is very moody so it’s hard to tell what kind of answer you will get. She suggested that I give her more work, which is hard when there is no incoming work and you can only file and clean the office so many times. She also didn’t want me keeping a record of the times I found her sleeping because that could cause problems with H.R.! How do I cover myself in this situation? I have to write her review and I was thinking of writing one of her goals was to come to work after a good nights sleep or something. It’s tough because I’m not getting any support from my boss and our H.R. dept isn’t exactly employee friendly. How do I protect myself? Additional Details She has wormed her way out of anything wrong she had done and denied sleeping when I have tapped her on the shoulder to wake her up. She is also a foreigner and believes there is a target on her back because of it. |

Document everything! Keep a journal of everything that happens.
Write up a letter for sleepy that states simply "This letter is to document that I have discussed sleeping on Company time with you, and that this behavior is unacceptable and against Co. policy. If this behavior continues, discipline will be issued, up to termination."
Have sleepy sign and date it, and then give her a copy, put one in her file, and keep one in your journal. Good luck |

The only way to protect yourself is to document in writing that you have warned your assistant about sleeping on company time. You should also send an email to your supervisor explaining the action that you have taken. Keep a copy of the email. Now you have a paper trail that proves that you took appropriate action. Start this process the next time that you catch her sleeping. |

every time you see her sleeping, take a big pile of books and drop them on her desk loudly. Write her up and put the documentation in her HR file and tell her if she does it one more time, she's fired. There is no one in the world with half a brain that would dispute her dismissal. If it's that slow, do you really need her? |

Sounds like you already have covered yourself by taking the issue up with your superior.
I'm in a similar boat. I get in to work everyday at 6:30. Only one other person gets in early, and he uses his early arrival to justify an early dismissal time everyday. But between the hours of 6:30 and 9:00, I can barely concentrate on my work due to his snoring.
He was fired yesterday after a year+ of that. |

you have to put it in writing each time and she has to sign it..after 3 times it is a means for firing..she will not be able to file for unemployment.. other wise if you fire her without the signed write ups then she WILL get unemployment..and 18 years pays a bunch |

You are her boss. You tell her not to be sleeping, because like you said, it's your *** on the line. If she doesn't fix it and stop dozing off, she's not worth keeping around, no matter how long she's been there. |

"she is supposed to greet and help other employees with requests."
"She suggested that I give her more work, which is hard when there is no incoming work and you can only file and clean the office so many times. "
She asked for more work, give her more work to do. Talk to other employees and have them give her 'requests' to complete.
EDIT:
Video her sleeping. Make sure you have proof. |

This seems to be a problem in the work force. I have read articles on it. Maybe you should try giving her 15 minute breaks to be able to get up and stretch her legs, or have her do some physical work, such as clean some windows or run an errand? Suggest she eat a smaller lunch, and skip sugary snacks. Have her eat healthier foods and nibble throughout the day. Actually there have been many studies and when workers took a 30 minute nap, their productivity increased by 34%! Which makes sense! |
