The Wife | At the managers descretion means? |
What does this mean exactly? If vacation time and sick leave are at the managers discretion, does this mean that if the company allows 15 vacation days and as needed sick days, that "the manager" can decide she only wants to provide for 10 vacation days and 0 sick days? Just curious if there can be abuse of this "wide" statement and if so, what kind. |

I wouldn't say that the actual time is at the managers discretion...but the use of the said time might be at the managers discretion..and yes their could be abuse of this..because "at the managers discretion" would be based on the opinion of the manager..favoritism and bias are one of the major problems with this |

It probably means your boss has to approve when you get to use them. It’s to prevent louses from taking time off when the department is at its busiest.
Ex. If you're a CPA you wouldn't be able to take vacatinon on 4/14. |

There is the possibility for abuse, but not necessarily. It depends on how the vacation time and sick leave allowances are worded. The discretion may refer to the timing of the vacation, but not the number of days, if the number of days are guaranteed. As for the sick time, it may give the manager the power to be flexible. The company may have a policy of only allowing sick time if you have a doctors note. But this may give the manager the ability to grant sick time if he/she knows the employee is really sick, without needing a doctor note.
Basically, it's impossible to know what that statement means without more information on the company's policies. |

It just means that you are entitled to your 15 vacation days, but that WHEN you take them is at the manager's discretion. It's saying that you don't have the right to take them whenever you feel like it. You have to request the time off from your manager, and they have to approve it. If, for instance, you decided you wanted the week of Christmas off, your manager could make you work and not approve your time if there aren't enough people working. |

NO, you are entitled to what's in the Employee handout or book. No one can tell you that you can't take the allocated time given. However, what manager's discretion means is that the manager must approve the time off. A manager can't have all people taking off at once so it is his/her decision or discretion to approve or not approve a vacation due to scheduling conflicts or it's too busy exc. |
