jackie | Bad work ethics ? |
Do I need to change my attitude towards how I view work & corporation ?
Although I have a college degree - I've been fired from every job I ever had - for lack of professionalism.
I HATE corporations. My father was a top level executive at a global steel company and one day he got the ax. And my family's life turned upside down .
Corporations are inhumane. They don't care about families.
I guess that why I don't want to work for one and I don't really like suit types of guys.
Am I being unreasonable ? My father losing his position was traumatic to our family. |

You are being unreasonable. Hating corporations because your father was fired is like hating all Irish men because you were mugged in Ireland. Corporations are run by people, everyday corporations and businesses run by individuals are faced with making decisions and sometimes people have to be fired. Sometimes people perform poorly and and no longer deserve their job. I am not saying this is what happened to you father but he may be partially responsible. What would you do if you ran a business and due to the bad economy you had to let a few employees go? I suggest you take a good look at the situation and try to understand the other side of the issue. If you work for any company non profit or corporation you will be expected to work hard and do a good job, if you have a bad attitude or perform poorly you will be fired even from a non profit. You may want to call some of the people who fired you and tell them that you are trying to better understand what happened at your old position. Since you are not face to face with them they may be more inclined to be honest with you and let you know what you were doing wrong. If you do this don't disagree with them or be confrontational try to use this an a learning experience.
Good Luck |

It makes no sense for you to work for a corporation if you hate them. Start your own business, work for a nonprofit, work for a university. You have lots of other, better, more humane options. |

Obviously you are not cut out for corporate America.
Just like relationships, the new guy doesn't want or deserve your baggage from past relationships. You can't make them pay for your grievances. They don't owe you anything.
You are paid to do what they need. This is not how you work.
It sounds like you are only comfortable being your own boss.
You need to look into having your own business. Nothing will grow you up faster and turn you into a professional than depending on yourself to bring in a paycheck.
Your grudge does nothing but hurt yourself.
Resentment is like swallowing poison and waiting for the other person to die. Heal and go on. |

Corporations aren't supposed to care about families unless it increases revenue
Here's why:
Most all corporations are public companies. As such, it is unethical for them to do anything that is against the interest of their shareholders (basically, giving them a return on investment). If caring about the families of their employees has some benefit for their bottom line, then it is ethical for them to pursue it. However, if such an action is at the detriment of their stockholders, it is unethical for them to pursue such action.
Now many corporations set up daycare centers and have excellent benefits, but that is justified into attracting better employees who thus work more effectively and produce a better product, thus increasing sales. But it will always come down to revenue with publicly owned corporations.
I'd suggest you find a career path that avoids profit growth: Like teaching or social work. |

It looks like you are making too great a link between the past and your present. Your past is making you sour to your employers, albeit for good reason.
Considering your built in bias, you might want to consider working somewhere that is unionized. At least that way you can be fairly sure you won't be arbitrarily dismissed.
However, considering your repeated firings, you might want to review your behaviour and change it. If you can't you should really consider counseling. Your past is haunting you and making your life hard. That's the sign that you need to resolve the past, so you can move forward without so much baggage to carry. It's making you cranky ;) |

I've been employed by a fortune 500 company for over 20 years. I guess I'm lucky as my department management displays a caring attitude toward families.
You can be fired from small companies as well as large ones. Perhaps you should look closer at your attitude.
Based on your profession, I would think a small company would want you to represent yourself in a professional manner as well.
Perhaps you should look into starting your own business. |

You must understand in a world made with money. Corp have the best jobs for people with college education. They except a lot and give nothing in return. Like how my father tell me. Don't trust your family and your future in others people hands. Trust them in yours. Always no matter what have another plan even if it is not the best plan. |

What happened to your father and to his family is tragic. But life is not fair. You need to accept reality. If you don't like corporations or men that wear suits, don't work for them. Find other jobs that will sustain you and make you happy. Remember, life is not fair. Work hard. Dream big. Don't let a tiny pebble in the road ruin your journey. |

I understand why you would feel that way about corporations, and you are probably right. However, I'm sure that attitude is carried in your self-presentation at these jobs you have which is the reason you keep getting fired.
I don't think you're being unreasonable, but it may be unreasonable for you to expect yourself to work in that sort of environment after what happened to your family. You should consider working for a small, non-corporate company. Because they are smaller, their employees are not as disposible as they would be in a large company. They need you more, so they will treat you better.
Good luck! |

I can understand why you feel that way. I would suggest not working for one then. Do something that makes you happy. Find a job that isn't corporate. |
