Project management is a real profession involving organiational and people skills.

Senior managers often make the mistake of appointing project managers who appear to have very good organisational skills but who seem to communicate well with those in a certain clique, at the expense of others on the outside, whos' involvement is key to the project's success.

All the group must feel that they have an equal part to play in this.

Project managers or task leaders often think they are communicating with all the group well but are actually miscommunicating with certain people who don't feel able to express their views properly for whatever reason. A good man manager can spot this and effectively use one to one meetings with those group members who are affected in this way to encourage them to participate more actively.

Poor target setting for stages of the work/project can also have a detriment. Often the group set themselves unrealistic targets and don't achieve them as a result. This can be demoralising.

Under resourcing is another issue. Often 40 hours is available to to 70 hours work. This leads to unacceptable amounts of overtime working, which can lead to other issues regarding the morale and the health of the group.

Politics - Where some of the group are working for more than one boss or more than one project (almost always nowadays), pressure can be brought to bear on members when interest conflict.

Wrong skill mix - It's no good having all electronic engineers in a group that needs some mechanical engineering, or people who are good at organisation and liaison but know nothing about technical aspects drawing up specifications. The whole point about group work is that you bring the right skills together to complete the task. Having the usual suspects in a group every time is why a lot of projects fail time after time. This also touches on egos and politics. Very often group leaders are afriad to admit that different people need to be involved.

Self confidence, self esteem, talking down to people and making them feel like they are in school. Overcoming the initial 'why am I here, I'm wasting my time, this is just another gimic' course is half the battle won. Make people feel like human beings, make them think that their thoughts and opinions do count and the rest should begin to flow.
