Keine Kinder | Big problem at work, nobody cares!? |
I work here in the USA for a big international company. I am software developer for manufacturing. That means I write software that automates the process of manufacturing in China, Brazil, and Singapore.
The problem is every time there is a problem at one of the facilities, I have to jump and fix it right away. But when I need something from IT, purchasing, or whomever, I am usually ignored. I am very frustrated with this, because it happens pretty much every day.
So now when the project managers ask why I something is not done, I just say, “Because nobody gives a F**k about manufacturing.”. They just look at me. I get the old “you need a change of attitude”. Well, I have been here for 12 years, and the one thing that remains constant is the fact that nobody cares about manufacturing.
Maybe I have been here too long. My empolyee number is 74!
What do you do in this situation?

I'm not sure eveyone followed me. My employee number is 74. We have people with numbers in the 1000's. That means over 900 have come and gone since I started. |

One way to get people to care about what you do is to care about what THEY do. Do you interface with other people at meetings? Do you show an interest in how you can make their processes or workflow with you easier?
Because this happens to me I will tell you this- don't take the being ignored personally. Do you follow up with gentle reminders? Do you give the task a deadline? In my experience if you leave things open without a dealine, they DO get forgotten.
You may need an attitude check, tho- your answer to the project managers is pretty bad and really reflects poorly on you. My advice is change your outlook or change your job. And soon! |

Try adopting a Laissez-faire attitude towards manufacturing like your coworkers have. Eventually things will get so bad that no manufacturing gets done and people will start to care again.....or the company will go bankrupt and you get a new job. |

Go find work somewhere that doesn't have an "employee number"! Just the sound of that creeps me out. Employee number? Yuck. How can you expect anyone to respect a number. You can't. Go to work for a small business. Or better yet, start one yourself. Sounds like you have lots of experience. It is much more rewarding. |

Either I would quit or I would change my attitude. There is a saying that goes: "You keep doing what you're doing, you're going to keep gettin what you're getting".
Stupid is doing the same thing over and over and expecting something to change.

Show someone in authority how by resolving these problems it will lead to a hire out put, better products and intern make the company more money. Call for a meeting after you get all of your results done. Show your company that you want them to profit more and that you do really care about the company and her future. I would suggest you loose the "No one gives a F**k" line and try to come up with something a little more professional. You may have to stay on managers above you to get this resolved, but take the time to draw up a chart or a graph to provide some strong details on what it is you really are talking about. Problems that are addressed off the cuff over the water cooler rarely get solved, and only creates animosity. Lead by example and you may possibly get the results you want. This may require you to work even harder for a short time to demonstrate a better more efficient strategy! Get a hold of an ear that can help implement these changes, and always keep your professional game face on! Now, go make a difference and get back to all of us with positive results! Good Luck kid! |
