By shopping at Wal-Mart, are we saving money now only to wind up paying for it later?
I hear Wa-Mart is twisting the arm of manufacturers to move their productions facilities to China for the cheap labor, so that Wal-Mart can get their stuff real cheap. My question is, what happens to all those workers lin the United States laid off when their factory closes? Don't we, as the taxpayers, wind up paying for that in the long run? And isn't this going to lower our standard of living as more and more jobs are being done overseas? It might seem like were saving money, but at what cost?

Yes not only do the taxpayers end up paying for it, but, as you said, workers get laid off, and end up working at walmart, then they can only shop at walmart. also walmart forces other small business to shut down because of thier low prices.
Its like a comic i saw about walmart, where a WalMart greeter said to some customers: "walmart bankrupted my business, so i had to get a job at walmart. but now, thanks to walmart, i can afford to shop at walmart, have a great expirence at walmart!"

i truly hope the govt kicks wal's @$$ with some sort of legal suit. maybe break up thier stores, like break up the super centers from the warehouses and such.
But i think the US should make it as expensive to import goods as it is to make them domestically, via tarrifs.

I can't stand to even shop in Walmart. In the city where I live, Walmart has put alot or most small businesses out of business. I only go there as a last resort if I can't find it elsewhere. You are right; we are our own enemy.

Yea.......I have a love hate relationship with Wal-Mart. I love the cheap prices..because I can afford it but at the same time we kill our local economy, sell out, and we support cheap labor forces! Its really a hard situation. But our dependency on walmart will never change.

get the movie "the high price of low cost"---the story of Wal Mart.
you can get many of your questions answered.

Main thing, the family who owns the company is making uber amount of money each year, while investing next to nothing back to the welfare of their workers. It's a shameful thing to see!!

That's about the same sort of thing that people used to say about Sears and Roebuck. It is only partly true.

The hard fact is that most consumers, including supposedly loyal union workers, "buy Chinese" and will take the best deal they can get at the moment, regardless of where it comes from. For many years after WW2 many people, especially our veterans, wouldn't buy anything made in Japan. Today we buy Toyota, Honda, Mistubishi, Nissan and Subaru (except for the those who like German Mercedes, Porsche, Audi and BMW cars). Then we blame "the Administration" for our problems

I don't know about that, but I can tell you that Wal-Mart has been using "secret shoppers" for years to go to their local competitors and get prices. Then, Wal-mart will raise or lower their prices according to the information. This is funny because every Wal-Mart has a notice at customer service that says they do not allow secret shoppers in their stores and will remove any that come into the store. So, are you really sving money at Wal-Mart? Not really, not anymore. Use to be, yes, but not anymore.

Wal*mart does not support cheap labour. There are fair trade signs on some products that are produced in third world countries to tell you they were paid proper pay. It looks likea yin/yang logo & is green & blue. Check it out. I don't shop anywhere else.
