Call centres love them or hate them?
i have had the great pleasure of dealing with call centres over the past couple of days, all in another country, my amusement at dealing with people called Elvis and Mable was cut short when i realilised how rubbish they are.
firstly a rather rude Elivs from TalkTalk told me that he would sort out the fact that i no longer had the net at home, they have cut me off at BT so i could use TT, but good old TT have not sent me anything or could they tell me when i would get it, he would not say when and berated me for 'getting emotional' - little did he know that i had been on the phone for 2 hours trying to sort it out.
the second instance was with my bank, i could not transfur money from one of my accounts to my other, even though they are the same bank, i was told it was for security reasons !
why do we have to put up with dealing with someone who reads off a script and is totally usless at resloving any problems that arnt on the 'list' so to speak. just so the company can make more ÂŁ
Additional Details
p.s. i work in a customer is king enviroment, i was not at all rude to any of the people that i was dealing with, just firm and in the case of elvis i wanted to know how they could cut me off with out connecting me, oh and why am i paying for something i wasnt getting.

i really hate dealing with people who are employed to help and they cant.

You are not alone in your frustration. I work with computers both mainframe and PC/Servers and when I have to call for technical support, it really makes me angry when I get someone in another country that not only does not speak my language well enough to communicate with me, but really know nothing about the subject I am calling about except for what is written in their little script book. Heaven forbid you ask to speak to someone above this person that can actually help you. The worst part is I know people that were quite knowledgeable in these same areas that lost there jobs due to the overseas positions and the companies just don't care.

I have worked in calle centers in the Uk at the bottom end as an operator, then as a training officer and finally as a team manager. It is an industry with wide ranging abilities and standards, clearly demonstrated by various experiences of the general public. What the general public dont alwways realise is just what pressure the people on the phones the other end are under! It is traditionally a low paid job with very little prospect, the average life span of a call center worker is only 12 months and the industry also has one of the highest incidences for stress related illensses! Operators are set stiff targets in many of the sales environments, which due to the fact the work is lowwer paid, doesnt attract the calibre consistently of those people able to cope with the stress levels. Often the operators are young people who simply dont have the life experience to cope with customers under pressure.

Most call centre operators do use scripts, this is often for a very simple reason, because of the need for them to adhere to the law, such as the Data Protection Act. The scripts are meant to be used and some companies insist they are used rigidly, a sharp operator will pick out just how far they can stretch the script to please all and help them to achieving their targets, a very fine balance indeed.

There are some very good call centres and some very bad, i have heard of ones where any time off the telephone, such as loo breaks, are strictly monitored and conditions are evry hard, but I have been very lucky and worked in some of the best in Peterborough, where I was given the chance to work my way up the corporate ladder, so to speak.

I am not defending call centers, but merely writing a brief insight to help you gain some understanding....

If you get through to one which is obviously not in England, ask them if there's anybody there who speaks English as their native language. There won't be, but they'll swear black's white that they're not in Bombay (etc) but really in Croydon. Then ask them where they live, and reading from their script they'll say something like 'Streatham', so you ask them how they get to work and they say 'Bus' so you ask them "What number bus?" and at that point their script fails them and you've caught them out. At least that way you get a bit of a laugh out of it all - but don't waste time if the company concerned has got the cheek to be using an 0870 number. If you take the trouble and you've got access to cheap calls which DON'T include 0870s usually, then look on the web for an alternative land-line number if you think they're actually in this country. Personally, on principal I won't deal with any company using an 0870 number and I make a point of letting them know, usually by sending them an unstamped letter!

are you aware that there are people in this world with a severe medical condition that causes them to be that way?

Using call centres can be so exasperating at times

When you eventually get through to some one a lot of the time you can't even understand what they are saying because the have a foreign accent

Go with a brand name like bigpond or optus for your net and deal only with big banks and transfer online. keep your reciepts

Actually, I love them. Gone are the days when someone would have to close their till to answer the phone and risk aggravating both the next customer and the phone caller by doing two jobs at the same time.

My experience is that most of the call centres seem to be efficient and well-run. Then again, I have had one or two iffy experiences with low-cost power companies, etc, who seem to go for "cheapest is best" approach

I love the ones that ring your house (usually at meal times) offering a fantastic deal. I twist it and start asking them questions like how long they've been doing the job and do they like it and what car they drive or even better make up a medical condition and start whinging about it. After 5 minutes I end it by say "Thanks for ringing up for a chat, you take care now bye". I'd love to see the look of bewilderment on their faces.
Call centres are a pain in the @rse when you need to get something done though. I always insist on speaking to a supervisor, then I ask the supervisor if I can speak to his/her boss and so on until I've scaled the chain of command.

I am with you on this one. These call centres based on foreign countries are even worse when you have to report a "corporate" type problem from work. All they know is home user and they won't accept that you know more about the problem than they do and they just keep repeating scripted lines and sometimes (not being in anyway racist) in the most awful English. I usually end up hanging up and being no way nearer to reporting the problem. It is very frustrating.

Workers are also being underpaid and benefits taken away inorder to boost stock price and CEO's pay. The western world economy is being mortgaged for stock price and huge CEO pays. Untill profits fall noone is going to question this practice and service will continue to get worse.

I come from a customer orientated background where we were taught that the customer pays your wages. Anyway your question reminds me of waiter/esses who come across and ask you if everything is ok with your meal and then when you go on to complain they do absolutely nothing about it. What was the point in coming and asking then. This happens all the time in Cyprus and it really p***** me off.
