Can Gap fire you for not selling credit cards?
So my GF is working today and she calls me and tells me she's "expected to sell a credit card by today" she doesn't work cashier so it makes it 200% harder on her when she's working in a different department. She calls me asking to sign one for her, I don't really want to take a hit on my credit for something that's unethical and probably illegal. Is GAP allowed to do this? it seems quite unfair.

Wow I know they always ask me that crap, but is that fair? I don't think so. Try calling the Better Business Bureau they might have some insight or labor laws...

What she can do is approach every customer that walks in, ask if they need help, and try to promote the credit card.

I used to work for a bank as a teller, and a big part of our job was to sell checking accounts, saving accounts, CDs, etc. If you didn't make your quota each month, it reflected greatly on your reviews. I don't know if you would be fired or not, but I think you would.

I would imagine a company like GAP uses this as a criteria for raises and promotions, and perhaps when terminating an employment. I doubt they are doing anything illegal. Have her ask for instruction on how she makes this happen. If they require it, I'm sure they have techniques in place.

I'm not sure how you came up with your 200% statistic. If she is talking to customers in any way, shape or form, she has the opportunity.

Sure, they can fire her if they want to.

Yes, if it's part of her job she's got to do it. It's not illegal.

Employment at will...They can fire her for anything as long as it isn't discriminatory

If it's part of the job description, then yes. Some jobs require a quota to be filled. Maybe this is one of them. Why would it be illegal to sign up for a credit card?

no! they cant fire her, unless that is what her sole job is and she isnt making an epport to do so, if that was what she was hired for then she has to atleast try but they cant fire her for being uncessful

Did they give her an employee manual? I'm sure it was stated when she was hired that she had to meet a certain quota of credit card sign-ups.
