PlayDaily | Can I become a store manager considering…? |
I am currently a psychology major. I've already received my associates degree and I am going to be starting my junior year soon. I am interested in taking advantage of an internship program that Walgreens has to offer for those who would like to become a store manager. It says on their website (link at the bottom) that college students should apply, but that’s pretty much all they say about that. They don’t specify what the college student's major should be. Do you think I would be able to take advantage of this internship and eventually become a successful store manager with a psychology degree, or do you think I must major in business management in order to achieve this? Would this internship be enough to train me well for this position or would I need additional training by majoring in business management? I would like to earn my bachelor’s degree in psychology as this is what I am interested in the most (plus I really dislike taking math classes which I believe business management requires quite a bit of), but is it possible for me to major in psychology and still be able to take advantage of this opportunity and other opportunities like this? By the way, please don't just write some short comment saying a psyche degree is useless. I've already read enough of that on here. Please elaborate if you can. Thanks for your help!
http://www.walgreens.com/about/careers/retail/internship.jsp Additional Details Mavisthe..., a Walgreens store manager can make at least 55k a year, not including bonuses. This is part of the reason why I ask. |

Hey there! I found myself in a similar situation out of college, and I'm glad to tell you your degree is what matters (not what it's in).
I was a mass media major in college, and I'm now a businessman working at the global headquarters of a major movie theatre chain.
They'll just be happy you had a degree - it shows you were dedicated enough to earn it. If it's interesting to you - go for it! |

I thought you might find this helpful....i'm 23 and receiving a BFA in illustration this year (i basically just draw and paint and teach a few classes here and there) but that didn't stop my boss at the shoe store i work at to offer me the assistant manager position a few weeks ago. and let me tell you it's more than 15K a year!!! so now i'm making decent money and know that when i graduate i'll have the opportunity to make art on the side without having to scrape around for food! yay! so i say do it do it do it. they don't care what kind of degree you have as long as you are ambitious, are a people person, and can MOVE INVENTORY. goodluck:) |

They should offer you detailed information re: requirements, but yeah, I don't see what diff. the degree makes. Here's why: I met a woman on the light rail (train) in Denver who was the manager of the Budget Rent-a- Car division that handled fleet trucks, or something to that effect. She had a degree in anthropology. No degree is stupid, and usually, if someone wants a degree, it's merely as proof you were able to dedicate yourself to a particular discipline for 2-8 years. Anyone with a degree knows it's rewarding, but not easy, right? |

Okay, now think about this. You want to manage a drugstore. It pays about $15,000 a year. For that kind of money, they can't ask for much.
Seriously, for managing a drugstore, no special degree is needed. Your psychology degree is actually relevant, because part of managing is dealing with people - employees, suppliers and customers. Do take an Organizational Psychology class if one is offered at your school.
You won't need a business degree for this job, but take a few basic business classes such as accounting (I know, math, but you can't avoid this one), and Intro to Business or something.
If you want to move up within Walgreens eventually, like to regional management and the corporate office, you may want to go back later for an MBA. But no rush for that - better to get in the management experience first. It will help your career no matter what you do after college. |
