Can I claim compensation after a long powercut at my home (UK)?
I had a 7 hour powercut in my home last night and all the food in my freezer is ruined (I have a small child and it was full of his food so I am not going to take any risks with it)

Will I be able to claim compensation for this loss? If so, who would I approach about this - my electricity supplier, or someone else?

I don't want to claim on my home insurance because I will have to pay an excess and lose my no claims bonus.

I'm in the UK.

Thanks!

this is a tricky one as Im aware that most electricity firms will not pay out for a power cut. If it were a long standing problem you may have more leverage but would probably need to contact the industry regulating body. Realistically I don't think you have any chance of compensation as they will just say that what your insurance is for. It sucks I know but its just the way it is. I feel bad for you. your only option is yore's insurance and if you don't want to use that im afraid you'll prob have to lump it. you could try contacting your electricity supplier and ask to speak to a manager as it cant harm to try but I would doubt you'll get anywhere.

There was a programme on tv where a young girl and loads of problems with her electricity it even blew her tv, fridge and freezer so they wouldn't work anymore. they had to fight tooth and nail to get anywhere and that was with the tv peoples help. this is why i think it will be hard for you.

It sucks but I wish you all the luck in the world if you try

I doubt it. Your food would be fine for 24 hrs as long as you did not open the freezer.

Your frozen food should not be ruined after 7 hours unless you kept opening your freezer during that time. The electric company will not pay compensation until you have had over 24 hours with no electric.

HI my mum claimed on her home insurance and it didnt change the premiums at all. Ring up your supplier and see if they have something to give but otherwise claim on your insurance.
They'll ask you how much in money was the contents of your freezer. My mum said 150 and that's what she got back.

teddy
you need to find out who was responsible for the power cut, ie electricty supplier, because if its them, you may not get compensation, or indeed if you do will take an age to pay up.
I had same problem and claimed on my home insurance for lost food and got the cost of replacement. I did not have to pay any excess, so not sure why anyone should.

My fridge freezer was full so got 200 pounds back

hemplady
You'll have to claim on insurance i'm afraid. That's what it's for after all!

When the next bill comes dispute it and say that a certain amount of inconvenience ie not able to cook, drink etc. Had to order a takeaway, lost computer data etc. including the excess. Say what you think is a fair amount. This they should consider to deduct. As for the freezer you will have to claim insurance.
