I do interviews for a living, and if I do not hire someone I do not have to tell them why I did not hire them-if they insist I may tell them they are not good job fit. If the company has a policy in place there is no law that says they have to someone why they were not hired.
If your friend did not get hired at McDonald's it could be for numerous reasons,there a layoffs all over the country with the current economy. maybe something in his previous work history sent up a flag of some sort |

Be honest with yourself--based on your friends current appearance would you want him to serve you food? When he went for the interview how was he dressed? Does he real want to work??? People are turned down many times before they get a job. Why does he think that he is so special that they should hire him??
I worked for employment agency one time and a friend told me that her son was having a hard time getting a job. He had just finished college with no work experience. I told her to have him come in and I would see what I could no for him.
It was a large employment agency and when I went to the lobby and called his name, my mouth fell open. I asked him to step into the hallway. I told him that I was going to telephone his mother, and let her know why he could not get a job. He had on a tee shirt with the middle finger pointing up .
He was free loading off of his mother and driving her new car around town. She kicked him out of her house, and she said that she felled like a fool for putting him through college.
I know for a fact that In and Out Burgers has strict hiring policies. No tattoo can be visible. The male employees hair can not touch the collar. The female employees hair has to be pulled back from their face. No visible body piercing.No worker can just stand around and talk to their co-worker. If you do not have any work to do, help the other workers. If they do not need help, OH Well we do not need you.
They pay more than minimum wages, and everybody enjoys working for them. They are a Christian own company, and the next time that you go look under the rim of your soda cup. |

Firstly they don't have to say.
However it can be more complicated if he feels he has been discriminated by race, sex, age or disability.
If so, then he needs to contact his local Employment Appeals Tribunal. The local job center will have the info.

They don't have to, but normally they would simply say that he is not suitable for their needs, did not meet their standards, a more qualified candidate was hired etc.
If they have said any of these, then they have said why they didn't hire him. A politely worded letter asking for feedback on his interview technique to help with future roles may gain further feedback about the interview. As long as it is polite, it won't alienate them and makes him look interested, and they might mention something he can do do get a role. |

This policy has arisen because people refuse to take no for an answer and then if given a reason, try to argue that the reason isn't good enough...or even sue. |

Unfortunately they do not have to say why they do or do not employ someone..even if they sack someone it may not be the best reason. Your friend should move on, and try elsewhere, don't waste time analysing this. |
