No, banks are regulated by and insured by the FDIC. Credit unions are not. Banks are in business to make a profit for their shareholders who own stock in the bank. Credit unions do not make a profit this allows them to give more favorable interest rates to their depositors and borrowers who are also the "owners" of the credit union. |

I work for a bank, and I can tell you, simply, that the definitions of bank and credit union are quite different. Credit Unions tend to have 'members', and do not have to follow the same rules and regulations that regular banks have to follow through governmental laws. For this reason, however, credit unions cannot do some things that banks can do, too....(for example : credit unions cannot cash bonds, where any bank can cash any bond)

Credit Unions are not FDIC insured. They are protected by another government agency the National Credit Union Administration. |
