Can a boss force you to do work for him at his house on company time or when ever he want?

Only if this was one of the conditions under which you accepted the job.

I like most of the previous answers. I will add that it depends upon the situation. Basically, he is paying you and it is his decision as to how to use you. It’s his money. However, if you are working for a corporation, then his using you for personal projects is stealing from the corporation.

If I were working for a private individual, or the owner of a small company, I would do what he asks. It’s stupid to have an engineer doing janitorial work, but unusual situations do come up.

An important client might be about to show up and the place is a mess. In that case, I would do whatever is needed to cause the client to be impressed. More clients usually translates into more work, job security and maybe more lucrative overtime and that large Christmas bonus.

If the boss is meeting the client at his house, then I’m behind the lawnmower.

It’s really a team effort. Sometimes the catcher has to play center field.

You mean like wash his car? I don't think so. If he can legally I would be looking for another job.

Um, unless you were hired to be the housekeep, I'd say that's a violation of some sort.

You are not the first to have this happen to them. I was in a similar situation many years ago. The wife and kids had been out of town for a week or so and the boss had been enjoying a pig-fest. He needed the house cleaned that day since the family was due home that night.

My immediate supervisor drove me to the house after she stopped at the florist and bought a single red rose for me to place on the pillow of the bed.

What a sty! The man had done nothing but eat, sleep, and drop his garbage where he sat the entire time the wife was gone. It took all day to clean it up.

No, I didn't work there much longer. And you have the same freedom. No one can force you to do anything, but know that there are consequences for all actions. You may wind up being "layed off," put on "special projects," or fired. You do have a choice.

yeah ...and sometimes u can no quit coz u don't have any other way

Bill
If you're on the clock, you're his. If he runs the company, in most places he can fire you for any nondiscriminatory reason.

Now if he's a manager and there's a higher-up, you might be able to report him.

There aren't enough details here to give a full answer.

no... you can always quit. Personally, I would if he/she insisted.... if you're talkin about an office type job or corporate enviornment. That sounds like BS

Basically, yes.
It's probably stated in your contract that you can be sent to work at any location required by the company.

Check your contract. Although i have a feeling he just wants to get to "know you better". If its not in ur contract u can refuse. If it is, and he/she makes any advances on you its sexual harrasment and he can get into a lot of trouble.

nope, u can quit, or check the contract...

pra3tor
Unless it's specified in your work contract, then no.

Unfortunately when you work for others you can't tell them to f*** themselves unless your ready to be fired or want to be self employed or own your own business i.e. such as a Franchise.
