Yes they can call your current place of work.. In some states NY for example they can only give out certain info by law.. They usually check to see if you worked where you said you did, They also want to know if you are a good worker and what type of work you have done for them in the past. This is how they get workers that want to work and not People who are just looking for a job to mess around at. If you have nothing to hide I would not worry about it as it can be in your favor that they call the places you worked.. It will make you also look like you have nothing to hide if they call them apposed to if they did not call them.. It usually depends on the job that you are trying to get.
