They absolutely can. They should. And very many do. The position of the companies that all such things including tattoos show poor judgment and that the person is a loser is sound business practice. The bottom line is the very reason for the existence of the company. There are exceptions to the rule and well managed companies recognize them.

unfortunately yes it is legal for them to bar you for something simple as a nose ring. I know this from experience. If you just got it you can get a flat metal nose stud and file it down to pretty thing and then use cover up over it and make it look like you don't have one. I did this for a long time and no one noticed. I am not positive but I think there are tattoo artists and piercers working on legislation keeping work places from doing this. If they aren't they should because there are a lot of people with tattoos and piercings. For me my tattoos express my faith and if any work place bars me from employment or fires me because of them they will have a pretty big lawsuit on their hands...I have seen cases won because of this.

If stated upfront they can do what they want

If within the company policy they are prohibited than yes they can.

probably. you gonna sue them for that? unlikely they'll say anything specific about that. also depends on the job-if it's something where you have to face the public and image is important, they may well view that as part of that image.

They can and some do. I have had a nose ring for over 10 years now and I have not had a problem but it depends on if it is obvious or not as well as where you are working.

Of course. They can hire or not hire anyone for any reason. They can also fire anyone without a reason, its called at-will employment. Even if you are the most qualified person for the job they can choose someone else because they fit the uniform better than you.
