Can an employer retract an offer like this?
I work for the university that I attend. I was offered a promotion to a Manager. I asked for the afternoon to consider, and said that I would call and give them my decision before they left the office that day. When I called, my boss said that it had been decided not to promote me because they could save money by having less managers. I'm just wondering whether I have any rights because they had already offered me the position.

This job is ridiculous anyway, they do things like not putting the schedule up until two days before it starts, and they change the schedule frequently and insist that we must check it every day. We are also not allowed any days off, and even for funerals or illness they are unlikely to allow us days off.

Ugh. Suggestions, anyone?

Well it is legal to offer someone a job, then later fire them to save money. So I assume its legal to take back a job offer (same thing, but without the demoting). If its so awful, you should get a new job. Theres no reason to spend every day doing something you despise!

find a new job

Unfortunately, you pretty much have to accept the situation. I understand how frustrating it can be to work for a disorganized and thankless employer (such was my college work experience too), but the only way to not have to deal with these things is to find a new job. :(

If you don't have anything in writing, it's considered hearsay.
Might as well get a job at Wal-Mart -- sounds like their agenda!

Good luck!!!

The position was eliminated, so there is nothing that you can do. More likely than not, working there is an "at will" position, so they can terminate you, or your position, without cause.

The fact that you did not initially accept the position, or seemed to doubt the postion, gives the employer reason that you may not be the person to be in the position.
