pnut | Can my manager tell me i can't call in to work? |
the car is being fixed and my ride cancelled at the last minute. I called in to work to let my manager know i wouldn't be in today and explained why. She told me to walk to work but i live like 20 miles away. and then she told me she was going to call my mother whom i dont live with (i moved out). and i told her im not walking its to far and she said she is going to talk to the boss and the district supervisor. can she do this?

Sounds like she's trying to scare you into trying harder to get in to work. You have the right to tell her that calling your mother would be harassment and you forbid it. I mean, really!
Let her tell the boss and sitrict supervisor - you have a valid reason for not being able to come in. You may need to show your receipt for the car repair and maybe proof of your current address to prove that you really live 20 miles away and couldn't make it in. If there's not a pattern of you calling in, they really shouldn't fire you over this.
If they do, you can file for unemployment, and you'd get it.
Now, if you do have a pattern or history of calling in, they can fire you for that, and even if this time was valid, the fact that you've done it repeatedly would justify their action. |

Things happen all the time and if you can't make it to work on your scheduled day, she can call whomever she wants to report it. Your job may be on the line because of it, but if it is, would you really want to stay working for this company??
Did you honestly try every avenue there was to get a ride? If so, there is nothing you can do about it. I would of asked her to come get you if she wanted you there that bad. We have picked up several employees when their cars break down.

Yes, she can talk to the boss and the district supervisor. However, it they are half intelligent, they will understand your situation. Your manager sounds like a person who never had any authority before and is now trying to show how much authority she has. Only this time, she is wrong. People like that are not a--holes, but are hemoroids. An a--hole serves a useful function, but hemoroids are nothing but a pain in the rear. If the boss or district supervisor ask you about it, tell them exactly what happened and that you tried to explain the situation to your manager. Don't be negative towards your manager, as the higher-ups will see her for what she is. |
