Can someone tell me how Walmart is good for the economy. Besides having low prices.?

Additional Details
Wal-mart in my opinion is a really bad place. I feel guilty everytime I go in there but not guilty enough to stop going. This is for a test in my College Humanities class. This to me is the hardest question. Thanks for your opinions.

+ Creates jobs
+ Entices local business
+ Brings people from other towns into the area

- Can choke other businesses
- Large building zone

It's funny you should ask this, because a Wal-Mart plan is being made for my area.

Having worked there for a little over a year, I can tell you that they don't have low prices. Everything is priced just the same as it is at any other store. They have good sale prices, but that's it.
They create a lot of jobs, yes. But not good jobs. Every body is payed just above minimum wage, with bonus incentives when they get reviews. Those pay increases are usually ten to twenty cents, maybe.
Also, and most people scoffs at this, one of the hardest jobs there, the cart pusher guys, is paid the least amount with few to no pay raises, no room for advancement and constant shortage on people. Think about, these guys are out there rain, heat, blizzards, all of it for hours on end. Sure they have those little automatic pushers, but those break down constantly and management just tells them to do it by hand for the two weeks or so it takes to get it fixed. And on top of that, no one wants to apply for the job for those very reasons! I always felt bad for those guys.
Management is management, they are what they are. However, they are also usually brought in from outside stores. So, there goes any of the few steps up the corporate ladder for lower employees.
The benefits are crap, the regulations are in a word STUPID, and there is such a great amount of turn over. People quit, usually just get sick of all of it and walk out the door without a word, because they can't take the B.S. Usually, the employees are stuck working full time hours with part time pay, stuck in a windowless warehouse type building for hours on end and seeing the sun when you're very lucky. Depression is common within the first month.
Since I quit, I have insisted to everyone that I will never work there again and I don't recommend it for anyone unless they are in desperate need for a job or only need something temporary to carry over.
PS Sorry this is so long... But it's a subject I love to ***** about.

Most dollars spent at Wal-Mart get spent by Wal-Mart in foreign nations, buying the products sold in their stores. If we were to just let Wal-Mart sell all these cheap products they have purchased from over-seas without taking out loans, the value of the U.S. dollar would plummet, causing the U.S to become a weak country, eventually causing the country to go bankrupt. To counter-act this, the U.S. government borrows our own money back from these other nations, so that our trade deficit gets even larger. The port of Los Angeles has admitted that they bring in 10 times more ships than they send out, and 8 of these 10 ships are products headed for a Wal-Mart. Because so many people buy so many products from Wal-Mart (and other stores that buy most of their merchandise from overseas), and because so much money is getting sent overseas, we find our American based companies (Ford, GM, Phillips Magnavox, Intel) closing plants. These plant closings result in the loss of thousands of jobs. These people who lose their jobs cannot compete in a job market that is flooded by others who have lost their jobs, so these people end up shopping where it is cheap-Wal-Mart, therefore starting the whole process over again. Wal-Mart is killing this economy, not helping it.

They provide a lot of jobs, they contribute financially to the community, they help the tax burden, etc.

Walmart is a HORRIBLE company. They do several things bad for our economy.

1. They pay their rank and file employees horrible wages for the output expected.

2. They go into small towns and try to shut down the mom/pop places.

3. They buy almost all of their products overseas in massive quantities which in turn means lower prices (but at what cost?) This buying of things overseas has led to several major manufactures having to shut down because they can't be cost competitive with companies overseas.

And finally

4. They are the worst place to work for, the policies and bullshi t their make life a living hell. Most of their employees can't afford to live a decent life with the wages they make, but the higher ups are rolling in the dough.

It depends on how you define your economy. Taking the US economy, even though they purchase a lot of goods from overseas, they are also the main purchaser of many small businesses here in the US. Also, there is something called the dollar multiplier effect. Walmart makes money and distributes it to its employees, vendors, creditors, etc. Those people take that money and spend it in other places. Those dollars are spend again and again. On average, the retail industry shows a multiplier effect of approximately 7. So on average a dollar made at Walmart is respend seven times.

If you are talking about the global econonmy, Walmart, and other global behemoths help to ensure that goods come from the low-cost producers. If China can make widgets significantly cheaper than in the US, Walmart can resell them at a lower cost than if they had purchased those widgets in the US. That means that you and I as consumers can buy more stuff, because we pay less per unit. This is known as the principle of comparative advantage.
