Can the company you work for do anything if they find out you are interviewing somewhere else?
What happens if you're looking for a new opportunity and it ges out that your interviewing? Can the company you currently work for have grounds to give you the boot?

It may get out from taking time off in the middle of the week just a bit too often.

I certainly hope not. I go on interviews all the time. They are fun if you don't really need the job. And you never know when one of them might accede to your outrageous demands. On a more serious tip, if the word is already out and they have grounds to terminate you....if I was in charge and had a marginal(not saying you are) employee who I knew was looking elsewhere I might decide to do us both a favor.

AlaskaMusher
The answer is very complicated. If you work in a "At will" state an employer can fire you for any or no reason at all. Alaska for example is At Will. If your state is a "Just Cause" state you can only be fired for an acceptable reason. Pennsylvania is Just Cause.

Now if you are in a union, working under a contract or signed an employment agreement you may or may not be able to be fired at the employers whim.

And what is "Just Cause?" Well if you are calling in sick to go to interviews you are being untruthful, usually just cause. If you are following established procedures for taking time off that is not "Just Cause" unless you have been counseled that this frequent time off is hurting the company.

If you are in a very competitive industry it would be Just Cause if you interviewed with a competitor as trade secrets may be compromised.

And once the employer finds out what you are doing (assuming he hasn't figured it out already) he may try to entice you to stay (more $, better job) or he may just ignore you and let you slip away.

There is no easy answer. Contact you state's department of labor and determine your state's law.

Yes they can fire you, but chances are they won't fire you right away until they have someone to replace you. If a company finds out that you're interviewing, they're making the correct assumption that you're interested in leaving, so they're really just protecting themselves by trying to replace you (preemptive) before they get stuck without a body in that position.

as long as your past your probation period, no its not grounds to fire you legally. however they can and likely will make it very awkward for you at work, move you to a less desireable position, or look for a reason to let you go.

How does it "get out" that you are seeking a new opportunity? It is not something you can be fired for but it is not very discreet or appropriate to broadcast the fact that you are looking for alternative employment

OF COURSE THEY CAN .. you are not loyal to them .. why should they be loyal to you! In most states employment is at will ..you can quit any time and they can let you go at any time .. so they will...they will find some reason to give you the boot..too much time off, not getting the job done right, etc. etc..
