Can women work in oil refineries?
I had a friend who at the time was 21, worked for BP at an oil refinery. (He was a guy). He was making good money, able to afford $600-700 apartment. He didn't go to college for this either. I'm in need of a good job that pays well that doesn't require college expierence (that's what I'll be getting the job for so I can pay for college and a place to live). And I was wondering if women worked in oil refineries. Also, what is the base pay: $?/hr, what are the pros and cons of working for one, what are the dangers (any health risks?) and is it similar to working in the mill?

my step-dad works at the Chevron refinery in El Segundo, CA. he does the dirty work, but he makes good pay ($25-30/hr i think). i'm sure women can work in refineries, idk bout doing the heavy, dirty stuff, but you can ask them if you want. and getting the job is not an easy task either. you have to take a test, and even if you pass, they would pick only the ones on the top tier of the highest scores.

good luck!

Depends on where you live. In US you can.

Women work anywhere these days. It is against the law to discriminate on the basis of sex and/or race. Put in your application and wait for an interview.

Women can and do work in oil refineries. Pay is, of course, dependent on the job. Are there risks? Certainly, just as in any other occupation -- one needs to understand them before accepting any position.

Good luck.

according to discrimination laws, a refinery can not, not hire you because of your sex!
dangers- the main dangers are fire and the fumes...not sure on the details-sorry
base pay, depends on the company and location, but i am sure its above $10 an hour

Well I cant speak for all of them but if you want to go to college and have a job in the oil industery its not a good choice. I know someone who worked for Arco here in So Cal. He said that when he started he got payed $15.00 an hour worked 6 days a week 12 hour shifts. When he started he had to deliver to the worse areas in So Cal and after years of working there he slowly starting going to better areas.

They do not care about there workers he said. Its like everyone is just a tool and when you leave they just get another one. He was often driving almost asleep. Was putting gas into the pumps a few times in Long Beach when there was a robbery at that station.

Hope this helps.

yes women can work for an oil refinery. My sister's boyfriend works for an oil co. I asked him about that a while ago, he says that the women that usually work on them are very rough/butch, and the others don't last long. It's very hard work and very dangerous. Most women can't cut it or just don't want to.

yes. tough job.

If you are told no file for discrimination. There shouldn't be any reason why you couldn't.

Yes you can but if you are starting at the basic level and working in the field don't expect it to be easy. They work up to 80hrs. in a week, so that means lots of overtime and little sleep. Pro=Fast money. Con=Lots of work.

yes you can

It's tough work the pay is good, but it is dangerous and requires certain mechanical skills. I see no reason why a woman couldn't do it, the real question is why?
