jasper | Co-worker problem? |
My desk and office are not the neatest but that is my style. I am a superior employee, many raises, many commendations, and my desk and office have never been mentioned by my superiors. I was gone 3 days on business. When I returned I discovered a co-worker (same rank) had come into my office and "cleaned" it. She threw away a lot of papers and other material that she considered to be excessive. In doing so, she went through stacks of my personal stuff to determine (in her mind) what was excessive and unneeded. When I returned, she thought I would be pleased but I was very dismayed that my privacy had been invaded and that some of my stuff had been thrown away. I went to my supervisor who basically said, you are both good employees, I decline to get involved, lock your office door from now on. That was good advice but I was still burned, so last night I "rearranged" and "cleaned" her office. Now she is very ticked and not speaking. Did I do right or wrong? |

This is exactly the sort of office environment that leads to mass murder and other crimes, such as all of the cases of someone "going postal." The problem needs to be nipped in the bud before it reaches the point where she or you bring a gun to work. One suggestion would be to put one of those electric fence charges attached to your desk. It can be hidden in a medium size drawer of the desk and plugged into a wall socket. Attach the connectors to the desk itself and be sure to ground the charger to something that will accept a ground. Once you turn it on each day as you leave, DO NOT go back to your desk or touch anything. Along those same lines, when you go to work in the morning have some sort of hidden signal as a reminder to switch it off before touching your desk. Once she messes with your desk when you have the fence charger turned on, it will just take one time for her to get the message. |

You did the wrong thing. You acted spitefully. She was just trying to help you and you overreacted.
A messy desk is an indication of a disorganized person. Get your act together and stop making excuses. |

You did wrong.
A better course of action would be to bring this up to your management, and not seek revenge on your own.
She did wrong too, but you could have resolved it by talking to your/her superiors. By "cleaning" her office, you eliminated that possibility, and instead left the door open for her to now bring it up. Saying "But she did it too" to management will have them re-thinking your "superior employee" claim. |

You were wrong and your response was childish. Although you are justified in being annoyed at what she did, you should have just let her know that up front and requested that she never touch your area again. |

Should have gone to Human Resources. Since you cleaned out her office you both now have acted like children. Both of you were unprofessional. |

Vengeance is never the high road. Even though she should not have cleaned your office, it seems like her intentions were not malicious. What you did was malicious in retaliation. Better to have taken the high road. Now you have an enemy in the workplace and it will carry over to future encounters. |

Okay, from an "setting a good example" perspective I have to say "two wrongs don't make a right".
But...from the perspective of someone who has had their privacy and professional integrity violated I have to say "Sweet! Your co-worker got what she deserved!".
I agree with your boss, next time lock your office door. At the same time, he should be taking the offending co-worker aside and telling her that it is not her place to "organize" the desks of others and that it is a violation of privacy and professionalism.
I don't think you would be out of line if you had a very professional, concise and calm talk with her about that yourself.
Good luck! |

Technically speaking, two wrongs don't make a right, but I would have done the same thing..I don't blame you at all! |
