julesl68 | Corporate world-related drama. Need advice please!? |
I am on a committee that meets every year to discuss programs that our company is going to roll out for the next year (meaning product combinations that will be advertised). I attend this meeting every year, however this year I am not being allowed to attend because my boss and his boss will conveniently be at the out-of-town location for another meeting, so they plan on extending their stay and representing our company at the meeting. Well, this upsets me because I am the one who is on the committee and works with the comittee on the programs. Not to mention the fact that all my boss would have to pay for is airfare...the OTHER company pays for everything else. There isn't a lot of room at my company to move "up", so things like this keep me motivated to stay in this job. Not letting me go to the meeting is like a slap in the face and makes me question what I'm doing here. Anyway, my question is...am I over-reacting? How should I handle this? Forget about it or talk to my boss? |

You shouldn't stew silently, yet you have to be careful how you approach your boss with your disappointment. That is, you can't show it. Couch it in terms of what you can contribute to the meeting, and have in the past, and that you'll miss the opportunity to share your ideas -- not that you're miffed at being uninvited. You could also ask whether the reason is due to a lack of confidence on your boss's or the big-boss's part, and "how can I correct this to regain your trust?"
You may be surprised: the reason you're not going may be totally unrelated to you. Speculation: Maybe he needs a little private "face time" with his boss because HE's the one in hot water--or may be angling for a raise, promotion, whatever. You'd just be in the way--committee purposes be hanged, it's his career that matters to him, not you, not the committee. Could be something else you don't know and won't necessarily be told, but having nothing in the slightest to do with his/their perception of your performance.
On the other hand: Is there any other reason to suspect you're in dutch with the man? How have your reviews been? Has his demeanor towards you changed for the worse? Is his secretary or other close subordinate suddenly cold, rude, uncooperative, or distant? That's a dead giveaway your days are numbered. If you suspect that 's the case, get out now on your own steam: believe me, it's MUCH easier to find a new job while you're already employed. Once you're canned, you've got the mark of Cain on your forehead, and things get a lot harder.
Good luck, and try not to obsess over it. Just do your job the best you can until you can get some answers. |

It's obviously bothering you so you should talk to your boss. There might be more to it than they are telling you and he might be in the same position as you are. His boss may be questioning the relationship with this other company and wanting to see it first hand. There are all kinds of variables that you won't know unless you communicate. Tell him in a calm and rational way that it's one of your job perks and is an important part of you being on the committee. If you don't go to the meeting, it could impact how you do your job later. So, make a list of how going helps you during the year and present that to your boss. Ask him to explain the reasoning beyond what you already know. If you're professional, he will be too. |

He probably didn't think this all the way through.
Rather than stewing about it, calmly point out your valid reasons for needing to attend and that if you don't attend, you will be at a disadvantage during the coming year.
There really isn't any reason why you can't all go together. |

Talk to your boss. Now that you have aired your problem, you can sort out what to say and how to say it. Feeling left out is terrible and makes you feel insecure about your future.
Be sure to leave out the drama.
Keep in mind that his hands may be tied by budget constraints. Maybe he can make an appeal to appease a good employee. Think ahead how the conversation may go. I like to plan my confrontations carefully and it usually works in my favor since I am well prepared and they aren't for the dialog |

I would definitely talk to your boss. It's going to drive you crazy wondering what is really going on (if anything). If you're like me you don't need any extra stress in your life! Get it off your chest before you lose sleep over it! Good luck! |
