Could someone tell me 5 pros nd 5 cons of working at wal-mart or a new wal-mart opening in a town?Help!?

HeisMe
pros- they promote from within
stock options
one of the largest company's in the country
has always been family owned
they help you with your 401k

cons-lots of lawsuits for discrimination against women and with e.p.a. violations
nothing is made in America anymore at Wall-mart
men get promoted faster than women
they cause a lot of small businesses to go under
they DO NOT like union workers even though the union will protect you in some cases
and you are not considered a full time employee unless you work over 28 hours and overtime is a myth at wall mart

I watched this video and had such a change of heart about Wal-Mart. I could not believe some of the things that went on.

If you want 5 cons, here goes (in no particular order):
1. The health insurance they offer includes sky high premiums and co-pays. Some people weren't able to afford the health insurance. Others who HAD to afford it were faced with making decisions about how sick they or their children were because the co-pays and prescriptions were astronomical.

2. They are anti-union in every sense of the word. Mostly because they know that the way they treat employees and how much they pay is disgusting.

3. If any employee even brings up union, Wal-Mart sends out a team from Arkansas on a private jet to temporarily "take over" the store until the problem is "solved". Solving the problem usually includes firing anyone who started talks of a union or was involved in any way.

4. When Wal-Marts come into town, small or large, they literally squash the small businesses in the area, some of which have operated for many years in the same family.

5. Most city governments grant Wal-Mart grants to actually draw them to the area. Politicians love this because all the tax that the store brings in through sale of merchandise goes straight into the city. This would be good if only politicians weren't corrupt.

6. (Yes, 6) Wal-Mart pays their empoyees so little, that many employees are actually on state aid as well. These employees make so little, that they cannot support their families without the help of state aid. Wal-Mart even encourages employees to go on welfare or get food stamps to suppliment their income. So basically, Wal-Mart would rather the government take care of these people than step up and pay them more. All this from a company that literally brings in millions, if not billions per year.

arent they the company that hires illegal aliens?
That would be enough of an answer for me!

Wal-Mart has been the target of criticism from some community groups, women's rights groups, grassroots organizations, and labor unions. Specific criticisms include the company's extensive foreign product sourcing, low rates of employee health insurance, resistance to union representation, and alleged sexism, among other things.

pro's: steady hours and income, education reimbursement and health care, in-store discount, experience to be gained and potential growth and transfer to other states.

con's: people are rude to those behind the register- don't treat them like humans, all your friends will know where you work, no time to visit with people you do know, noisy and not much fun.

I worked for Wal-Mart several years ago and it wasn't a bad job. They had decent insurance and were very flexible with my schedule. But I don't like Wal-Mart anymore because I believe they hurt other legitimate businesses. They drop their prices so low that they put other places out of business, then they jack the price back up when the competition is gone. So, its more of a moral decision about what type of company you want to work for.

Texas Horse Lover
Pros:

1. Large, established company in no danger of shutting down.
2. You have the ability to move up in the company if you stay long enough.
3. Walmart is pretty good about working around your school or whatever schedule.
4. They offer discounts for their employees.
5. Some that are open 24 hours offer a great range of hours to work.

Cons
1. Big companies sometimes don't care about their employees enough, only their stockholders.
2. High turnover rate.
3. Some employees quit on the spot, leaving you to cover their shifts.
4. No health care benefits for part-time employees.
5. May require you to work late nights, since many are open 24 hours.

All in all, I think the pros outweigh the cons. :-)

BEEASTLY BUFFALO
Pros: Get to wear that bangin' vest. Managers make sick cash. Cake job.
Cons: You have to tell your friends you work at Wal-Mart.
That's all I got!

Nana
I worked there for 5 months. You work DAYS NIGHTS WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS. You Have no say in your hours. You work when they tell you to work. No bonuses unless you are there for 5 YEARS. Always part-time. You work so many hours 30 hours or more then they drop you so you never become full time. ENOUGH SAID.

striker
walmart maybe good and maybe bad in so many ways.. but to work there its ok.. u meet a lot of friendly and unfriendly people.. u get smiles and yells... but pay wise they will pay u accordingly.. and u can get easily fired but just like any other job only u'll be a retail store all you life enjoy

farmboy702003
My wife worked for wal-mart a few years ago...the only pro I can think of..employee discount. The cons...low pay..crappy hours..expensive insurance.

PROS: You work there & you will learn how to KI$$ A$$ in a hurry. You will also learn how to spot managerial BULL$HIT at it`s finest. CONS: IT`S WAL~MART! for god`s sake! You will earn more than peanuts, you`ll earn "NICKELS"! Will you really be workin` for Wally~world or for CHINA?

Mack
Depends on the hours you would work. Some people are night-owls, and some people are day and morning people. If you do work there, try to get the hours that are most comfortable for you, but that doesn't always happen..... And find how the pay too.
