I think the big 3 more or less have a triopoly, they take advantage of this and sell crap.
Personally I try to avoid supermarkets, we buy fresh meat and produce from a local farmers market. We really notice the difference in quality and taste and as it's all local we are helping the local economy.
Most fruit and vegatables from supermarkets are tastless and sadly we have become use to it, go to a farm shop and taste the difference, you won't look back.
The supermarkets squeeze every penny from the supplier to increase their profits the producers soon become dependant on the turnover from the supermarket and before long are reliant on this even though their business is probably no longer viable. |

Depends what focus you are going to take but....
The grocery market in the UK is driven by 4 main Players: Tesco; Walmart; Morrisons and Sainbury - their marketing policies actually determine the way we as consumers buy and want - in a way making It a "self fulfilling prophesy" - however there will be a time when there can be no further market expansion on their side. ON the other hand there is also now a more traditional move to Farmer's Markets/ Buying local and buying directly from the Farmer - this is a way of survival for many farming communities that would otherwise not have enough money to cultivate next years crops. The trend now and the "Buzz Words" that are now around in strategies by all players in the groceries market is "How can we be perceived to be saving the environment?" - look out for changes in next 3 months in terms of how the big 4 market this concept to competition with the raise of the "traditional throw back" |
