The above answers are incorrect. Two transactions occurred. First, SBC acquired AT&T Corp. Immediately after the acquisition, SBC changed its name to AT&T Inc. (as opposed to AT&T Corp., which was the "old" AT&T), in order to capitalize on AT&T's positive consumer recognition. Second, the new AT&T Inc. purchased BellSouth. The new combined company will be AT&T Inc.
Cingular was previously jointly owned by SBC and BellSouth. Since SBC and BellSouth are now all AT&T, the current plan is for Cingular to change its name to AT&T Wireless, as the AT&T name has positive customer connotations. This is ironic, as a few years ago the old AT&T Corp spun off AT&T Wireless into its own company, which then was purchased by Cingular. So essentially, AT&T Wireless changed its name to Cingular after it was acquired, and now it's changing its name back to AT&T Wireless. |
