Some did, yes. Many of our Founding Fathers were slave owners. It was also a debated topic when the nation was founded. A debate that did not end until the Civil War. |

Definitely. George Washington owned slaves while he was the president. His will bequeathed them to Martha, then had a clause that the slaves were to be freed upon Martha's death.
As a young man in the early 1850's even Ulysses S. Grant owned a slave, whom he freed in 1852. During the Civil War, as Grant's troops encircled Vicksburg, Grant's wife had a couple of slaves given to her by her wealthy Missouri farmer father. (Grant himself said that he came to abhor slavery.) |

Washington had many, and freed them in his will. If you go to Mt. Vernon, there is a monument to them located in the area where they were buried in unmarked graves.
Jefferson, an avid planter, was said to marvel at how farmers in the Northwest (now midwest) managed to support themselves by farming without slave labor. |
