An employee is 'laid off' due to a business downturn, and is no fault of theirs. In this situation, the individual can often get unemployment benefits, while searching for a new job.
But when an employee is 'fired', (aka 'terminated'), it usually involves some error, or wrong doing on that individual's part. Either a failure to abide by the company rules and employment policy, providing false information on the application, criminal activity, etc. Failure to abide by company rules, etc, may include attendance failure, neglecting to arrive on time, or even behavioral problems such as bullying, or sexual harassment. When an individual is 'fired' there are no entitlements, or benefits. If an individual who has been fired tries to draw unemployment benefits, they will be turned down, unless they can prove they were fired without cause.
Being fired from a job is a black mark on your work history too...future employers want to know why you left earlier jobs, and remember, if you lie about being fired on the application, that's grounds for getting fired again, if they discover the deception.

Laid off usually means the company is restructuring and your position has been eliminated.
Fired means you either violated a company policy or have not successfully made it through a probation period.
If you're laid off, depending on your length of service with the company, you would likely be given a severance package.
If you're fired, you get escorted out the door. |

Not much if you are trying to pay the bills and keep your family fed but I guess from the employers side, the difference is between you having done something to have been dismissed (fired) or there were circumstances within the company (ie. slow business, out sourcing, etc.) that no longer made you neccessary (laid off). |
