betty | Difficult co-worker. Very insulting of others and annoying, but not in front of the boss. What to do? |
For the past several months, those of us affected have just kept our mouths shut and rolled with the punches, trying to take "the high road." But, going to work is increasingly difficult since this new person was hired. Things were great before. The boss has no idea, and although the boss would be saddened to hear that the office culture has taken a nose-dive, I'm not sure if the boss would do much about it. This new person is very conceited, unprofessional, and insults others for her own benefit. She has a loud-mouth and tried to debate everyone on everything. Several people have actually thought about leaving the office because it is so bad. We also heard that the new hire has a history of tarnished relationships in the workplace. Ideally, the new hire would leave the job and that added stress for us would no longer exist. I'm sure every office has a few of their own less-than-ideal employees. Does anyone have any professional experience with this? Do you have any suggestions? |

I don't think that confronting the individual would help based upon the comment you have made. If it was a couple things and they are reasonably open to suggestions, then I would talk to them. But in the situation that you have said, you can go to the boss alone or as a group to discuss the issue. DO not make it threatening or derisive. Make it informational and encouraging. |

Call her on her inappropriate behavior. Quoting something I heard in a leadership seminar, "name their game". Ask her does she if insulting others is her means of getting attention or "how does it benefit you to have our attention right now?". Don't ask "why" questions. Make her defend her behavior. Taking it to your supervisor is probably a better idea since its not your job to coach employees, but put her on notice that what she does is silly and you're not gonna have it. |

It seems obvious that your boss didn't follow up on - or look past - her references.
1) Talk to her. Do not use the word "you". Focus, rather on her unnacceptable behavior. Tell her how it hurts you (not others). Suggest alternative behavior.
2) If this has no effect, and it is hurting the company, make notes as specific instances arise. When you have several ...
3) Review them yourself, and think about how YOU may better have handled the situation.
4) If there is no other way out, compare your notes with those of others (I assume you and the others are talking about her) and set an "official" meeting with the boss, but don't go alone.
5) In the meeting with the boss, again, focus not on her, but on the behavior, and demonstrate how it will impact the firm.
6) Be ready with a suggestion as to course of action.
Remember, more than likely, this person is ultimately very unhappy and insecure. |

Everyone in the office needs to ban together and request a meeting with the boss. Cards on the table, everyone must be on the same page. You owe it to yourselves and your boss. I am sure your boss will be more than saddened and if he/she has decent management skills you will be thanked for your honesty and forthrightness and you may save the business in the long run. |
