As far as I am aware if you cancelled the direct debit with the actual BANK then they are liable for the money. Speak to the bank and tell them what happened. They will have to sort it out with British Gas. It wouldn't hurt to complain to British Gas too and see what they say. |

You have to contact that company first to cancel a direct debit. You didnt set up the direct debit with the bank, you set it up with the company. If you did infact contact that company first and they still charged your account then you should first try to contact them back to ask them to take the charge off your account because you asked them in the first place not to debit your account any longer(providing you did so). Give it a few days and then if the charge isnt refunded then you can dispute the charge with your bank.
Good luck! |

No they dont have the right to re-instate it. They have to write to you asking why you have cancelled it.
I would speak to your bank immediatley. Tell them what BG have done and request they return the money into your bank account. |

NO, for them to take the money you would have to authorise a new direct debit, saying that if you cancelled the direct debit only a couple of days before it was due then the process would have already been in operation for them to take the money from your account. |

Hi Tom, this is not a nice situation to be in. Pop down to your bank and ask about direct debits, before asking for an explanation. They might be the ones at fault for your overdraft if so you should not accrue charges. |

No, there's nothing you can do: The reason all of these companies want to use direct debits is that they can unanimously change the date, frequency & amount at any time. They can also draw money after you have cancelled if you have either not informed them or not given them the notice they require.
The next time you set one up & they send you a copy of the direct debit guarantee, READ IT! |

This happened to me not the same company. I was abroad at the time and did not notice it unti the third bank statement. I went to the bank with the statements, they stopped the direct debit immediately and refunded the money to my account the next day. I also received a letter of apology from the bank over the error. Don't be fobbed off get it rectified |

i shouldn't think so you have to give permission for them to take it and if you have cancelled that then i'd say no but ask your bank what has happened and why |
