My employee handbook says Labor Day is a paid holiday off. I just started so I know I'm not getting paid, which is fine. But listen to this, they are telling me that I have to work....? WHAT? What should I say?
No you don't complain, you ask your manager to explain the discrepancy in the handbook. Make sure you have read it carefully..that you qualify for the holiday off. If you just started you are probably not eligible to take it off, and therefore can be asked to work. Don't assume you are correct until you have asked for clarification. (retired IBM exec mgr)

You are your own individual, you can comply with your employer's demands or face potential reprimand. When I managed I had a system that allowed seven occurrences in a year that was allotted before terminated. With my system one absence equaled one occurrence, with a doctor's not it was only half; late to work up to 3 hours was 1/2 occurrence, past three hours was one occurrence (Same as being absent) same also applied for leaving early, I will not get into quality control or scoring for that being it is not relevant to your question.

Entitlements are normally accrued, so as a new starter I would think you just don't have the required hours in.

Who told you that you have to work? If it came from your boss, show the handbook and get a clarification. It also may be because you're on probation with the company for starting out.

It depends...I was a Federal employee,and we were closed for all holidays.The catch was that only the full time employees got the day off with pay.Everyone else either came in a did work that needed to be done,or had the day off with no pay.
