I have worked at a retail store for 3 years. We have a small staff (7 people). I am the 2nd oldest person at the store and I am still an associate. Earlier this year, we had an opening for a keyholder. Because of my schedule, I couldn't apply, so a girl I work with got it. Well recently, we had 2 openings for keyholder. Another girl I work with quickly snatched one up before I could apply. She was promoted within the store, just as the girl earlier this year. For the last position, it was between me, a new associate (no experience) and an outside candidate with sales experience from other stores.
So to make a long story short, my manager decided to hire the person from outside the store, leaving me once again as an associate. I am offended because not only am I a great worker, but I have store seniority & experience. My manager claims they hired this person because she could bring experience to the store. I really feel like I deserved it!! Do I have a right to feel upset?

I should add that both of the individuals who were promoted within the store are younger than me (age-wise) and have worked at our location for less time... |

Make sure they know that you want the shot at the next opportunity! Then remember that it takes different skills to manage than it does to sell. Much different skills. Polish you management skills up with some extra reading perhaps? So that you have the confidence you may need when it comes around again, you know it will come again so try to be better prepared. Heh it only costs you time. There are some great books on management at the library or $5.00 bookstore. Don't have or give any attitude unless it's positive! It sounds like you are the kind of person that they should recognize as management talent. Just prepare for the opportunity like crazy and remember if you don't ask for it they will never know that you really wanted that shot at giving them more. Good Luck on the next time. |

There's no reason to be mad. You lost your first 2 chances because you couldn't apply and the third hire had more experience. Be sure to jump on the next opportunity before anyone else. That's all.
Also understand that seniority isn't worth much in this day and age. We live in a country where younger people are now getting bigger titles because they're more aggressive professionally and in some cases just cheaper labor. |

How would she know you were interested otherwise - you have to speak up in this world - you snooze, you lose and age has nothing to do with anything |

as a business owner I would say this that I do not promote someone due to seniority. I hire someone due to who I believe will do the best job. I imagine they think that you are not the best person for the job if that makes you un happy then you should start to look for a better job. Do not get mad just change your situation by finding something you like better. If you go to another retail store you will fnid that they like your experience and you may be the one that they bring in and put in a supervisor type of position. sometimes it is easier to get the promotion outside of current company you are in. |

i would be too but sometimes you sort of gotta take that as a hint. start job searching for somewhere that will offer you the position you want, at the pay you want or maybe talk to your current job and find out why they are holding you back.
hope this helps just a lil bit. i went threw a hard time at my old job myself. they couldn't afford a raise when they knew how worth it i was. I found another job that pays 200 bucks more a week, same hours plus benifits and paid vacations. |

I'm sorry that you are in that situation. But managers hire & promote people (MORE ability) who CAN BRING business to their store. Seniority & years of experience is not that relevant anymore. Maybe these people are more reliable. Able to connect w/ the customers, etc. More skills mean possibility of promotion. |
