Do Pharmaceutical Company's really need to advertise?
Since Doctor's are the ones who are supposed to prescribe our medications, why do the drug companies need to spend millions of dollars to advertise to the general public? Would they be able to lower the cost of medicines if they did not spend so much on advertising?

Of course! How else would people know what diseases they had if they couldn't see it on a commercial! *insert cynical look here*

Yes. Advertising REALLY pumps up the profits- because it convinces the people that they REALLY "need" the drugs the Pharmaceutical Companies are pushing. It's now a case of the "cart pulling the horse"- where the DOCTORS are now being told by their patients- what medicines the people want prescribed to them- based on what they see on TV !!! If THAT isn't unsettling- I don't know what is!

NO, I don't think that they would lower, It is a marketing strategy, for the market segment particularly targeting, the curiuos people, and this kind of people are the maven for the word of mouth that this drug exist and were manufacutured by a certain company. This people particularly are the one who made testimonials about the drug that they tried. and this kind of consumers can greatly convince others through their experiences

I think all people are hypochondriacs in one way or another, and if the consumer/patients,goes to the Dr,with the symptoms, the Dr will prescribe. It is a sad fact that many Dr's,who test trial samples, often receive financial compensation from pharmaceutical company's which make the drug in question.

catdaviesca
In Canada they aren't allowed to advertise prescription drugs. I believe the reason is that these are drugs that need a doctor's knowledge to know best whether or not a patient should have it.

Yes, they could probably lower the cost if they didn't advertise. It is my understanding that they also offer kickbacks to Drs. for prescribing their particular brand of medication.

Personally, I've found that it's reading about the results of clinical studies in the news that impresses ME most about different medications, not the ads.
