They knew that the growth would have been much slower as a single binded unit as it actually has been today with the company being split into two groups and making enormous profits.
Whatever has happened, it is history now. Irrespective of their motives, by the split the entire operations of Reliance have unlocked immense value for the stake-holders and the economy as a whole. Even if this is a stunt, it has worked well for everyone. If required, another stunt to unite all later on could also be meaningful - may we debate on this now?!

The benefits are there for everyone to see. They had to unlock value in communications - petro biz and division gives a clear focus as to where they are headed.
The way things are going each of the group is growing from strength to strength. It is better to split rather than keep the friction flowing across the organization which does not help in growth.

i don t find that, but u rightly said after split, there combined market cap has increased multifold. their personal assetts are also increased like any thing. one thing we must praise that dhirubhai has cultivated a lot of good business in both of them.
